Department Description
The California National Primate Research Center (CNPRC) at UC Davis, is an Organized Research Unit that conducts interdisciplinary research programs on significant human health related problems where nonhuman primates are the animal models of choice. In addition to its major efforts in the area of research, the CNPRC is also committed to its missions of teaching and service.
Job Summary
Under general supervision of PI, assist and perform assigned formal behavioral observation methods to monitor, record, and analyze social interactions between nonhuman primates in large group enclosures and evaluate rates and levels of aggression and affiliation in the primate breeding corrals. Assist and conduct intensive behavioral observations (6+ hours per day) and interobserver reliabilities on 45 corrals housing up to 180 nonhuman primates. Provide support and assist in the conducting of research on social aggression and stability of large corrals to develop efficacious management strategies. Collect data on daily management activities and environmental variables for corrals. Assist in experimental social manipulation of breeding corrals.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Perform diversified tasks that may require squatting, kneeling, bending,
  • Stooping, or standing up to 8 hours per day.
  • Manual and visual dexterity to perform all duties with emphasis on attention to detail and the operation and maintenance of equipment is essential.
  • Wear protective clothing for extended periods of time including: gown, coveralls, gloves, masks, face shields, goggles, sleeves and head covers.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Measles vaccination or proof of illness required. This position is subject to Medical Surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy.
  • Employee shall participate in required preventative medical and medical monitoring programs which may include blood tests, immunizations, TB screening, Blood borne and Airborne Pathogen training, etc., and are provided to meet Federal, State and University requirements.
  • Must be willing to perform assigned duties in a BioSafety Level (BSL) 2 or 3 facility where nonhuman primates may be either naturally or experimentally infected with potentially hazardous infectious agents such as HIV, SIV or Herpes B virus working area is located within a defined animal area and may include biohazards.
  • Work in areas where hazardous materials and/or infectious diseases are present.
  • Required to wear protective clothing in circumstances that require personal protection from infectious diseases and animals.
  • Work occasional overtime. Work occasional weekends and holidays.
  • Provide after hours, weekend and holiday emergency support as required.
  • California National Primate Research Center employees are directly or indirectly engaged in the performance of work on Federal or State contracts and grants as well as periodically come into contact with controlled substances and are expected to abide by the UC Policy on Substance Abuse, the Federal DrugFree Workplace Act of 1988, and the State DrugFree Workplace Act of 1990.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Education/Experience:
  • Experience utilizing formal behavioral observation methods and techniques to monitor and record social interactions among nonhuman primates living in large groups.
  • Experience using MS Excel and MS Access for data entry, upload, review, and maintenance.
  • Experience following research protocols and oral/written instruction with attention to detail.
  • Knowledge and technical experience in behavioral observation and data collection of rhesus macaques, preferably with social network type data.
  • Experience working with macaques, ranging from infants weighing < 1 pound to adults weighing >30 pounds, safely and in a manner that promotes animal welfare including recognizing changes in animal physical appearance or behavior.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):
  • Interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills to interact professionally with a diverse group of people including but not limited to investigators, visitors, veterinarians, students and staff.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of animal behavioral observation and data collection. Skills to use handheld electronic devices to collect behavioral data.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Preferred Education/Experience:
  • Experience manipulating and analyzing computerized records of behavioral observations.
  • Laboratory experience processing biological samples.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):
  • Independent thinking and problem solving skills for research and technical problems to make the appropriate judgment to report when an animal requires veterinary attention.
