Job Summary
The Urology Biospecimens Banks and Informatic Technology (UBANK IT) under the umbrella of the UCSF Urology Clinical and Translational Sciences (UCATS) is a biorepository for tissue and fluid biospecimens, as well as corresponding clinical data collected from genitourinary patients and provided for academic and external research. The UBANK IT specimens consist of specimens collected from prostate, renal, and bladder cancer patients and includes ambient formalin fixed paraffin embedded (FFPE) tissue and H&E slides, as well as frozen blood, body fluids and tissue stored at -80 °C.
Under the direct supervision of the Urology Research Director, the Biobank Lab Assistant II will be responsible for accessioning, inventorying, and organizing biospecimens into the database as well as the archival specimen storage; entering and managing database information and updates; and obtaining appropriate specimens for individual projects. In addition, the Lab Assistant II will assist in an ongoing project to digitize H&E slides for current and future research projects by obtaining appropriate specimens, cataloging and recording all information about specimens into the database, de-identifying and preparing slides, loading and unloading slides into the scanner, and performing quality control checks of the digital images.
The Biobank Lab Assistant II will be responsible for UBANKIT equipment maintenance, which includes overseeing the upkeep of 9 LT Freezers, 2 digital slide scanners, and other pertinent equipment. This role entails maintaining meticulous records of maintenance activities, promptly addressing any issues that arise by reporting to the supervisor and ensuring the availability of necessary supplies by coordinating procurement efforts as needed.
The Biobank Lab Assistant II may be tasked with processing biospecimens including preparing blocks and staining slides and processing blood and urine samples (such as spinning samples, pipetting) by following specific protocols.
Finally, the Biobank Assistant will perform other miscellaneous duties or special projects as assigned and will comply with all aspects of the job according to written procedure. Specific duties and responsibilities may vary depending on department or program needs without changing the general nature and scope of the job or level of responsibility.
