Job Summary

The incumbent will work with a complex laboratory in mesenchymal stem cell culture techniques, including oversight of Jr. specialists, volunteers, and graduate students; takes charge of the development and execution of multi-disciplinary projects, and performs state-of-the-art, complex research projects, in collaboration with academic supervisors. The incumbent researched and develops methods to translate findings to allow use of novel stem cell advancements into pediatric cancer treatment. The incumbent consults with supervisor and other academic or professional researchers on the nature, and overall objectives to be achieved. Will inform of more difficult and problematic areas encountered and suggests solutions. When necessary, provides training; contributes significant original/innovative ideas. This position is integral to future program project and grant funding and to the success of the Department of Surgery in finding novel treatments to save the lives of patients with currently incurable diseases.

Minimum Qualifications

  • BA or BS Degree
  • Experience with biological sample processing
  • Demonstrated experience in working with multiple teams and balancing timelines and core needs.
  • Ability to work independently, with emphasis on the ability to closely follow standard operating procedures.
  • Ability to lean and follow basic and appropriate lab safety procedures.
  • Ability to organize data, keep careful records and notebooks.
  • Ability to work in a service role for multiple investigators and on several concurrent projects rather than to focus on specific projects or areas of research
  • Excellent knowledge of computer applications: Electronic communications (Microsoft Outlook), statistical software packages (Excel, Prism), Endnote, internet search engines, literature services (Pubmed, etc.), word processing and graphics programs (Microsoft Word), image analysis (imageJ).
  • Excellent project management, research and data skills.
  • Strong organizational, planning and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage several projects simultaneously while meeting individual project timelines.
  • Strong problem solving and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to pay close attention to details.
  • Proven ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing to academic and lay audiences.
  • Excellent writing skills and previous experience in writing manuscripts, abstracts and/or grant proposals.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience interacting with professionals in multiple disciplines.
  • Animal handling and experimentation experience.
  • Advanced software skills to organize data, and quality assurance records.

Department Description

The Department of Surgery encompasses a wide variety of surgical specialties. These include bariatric surgery, burn surgery, colorectal surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, gastrointestinal surgery, hepatobiliary surgery, endocrine surgery, pediatric surgery, plastic surgery, transplant surgery, trauma, acute care and surgical critical care surgery, vascular surgery, and oncologic surgery. The Department’s extensive surgical expertise, in combination with ongoing teaching and research activities, provide ample resources and advanced surgical techniques for patient care.

The Department of Surgery has a strong basic and translational science and research programs committed to finding treatments and cures for debilitating human diseases and injuries using human stem cells. The incumbent supports the goals of faculty members in the Department by application of advanced methods of molecular biology, and is responsible for seeking current, and developing new techniques to culture placenta derived mesenchymal stem cells for preclinical, and clinical trials, working toward treatments for incurable diseases, and in some instances, enhancing overall quality of life.
