This is a 100% limited position for 1 year with the possibility of extension or conversion to career status, based on the departments needs and funding.
Under the supervision of the Principal Investigator (PI), the Lab Assistant will assist in research aimed at understanding how Toxoplasma gondii cells and/or Schistosoma mansoni worms (larval stages) accomplish physical feats like movement, tissue invasion, and shape change. The incumbent will use standard repetitive experimental procedures to culture and image mammalian cells, Toxoplasma gondii cells, and flatworm (Schistosoma mansoni) larvae. Assist with culturing cell lines, engineering cell lines, imaging cells and parasites using fluorescence microscopy, and quantitative analysis of microscopy images and movies. May assist in the development of theoretical models of motility or shape change in lieu of some experimental work, as needed. The incumbent will also perform lab management duties including ordering and receiving supplies, maintaining clear and accurate records and organizational systems, maintaining lab cleanliness, and coordinating lab safety compliance, equipment maintenance, etc. Perform other duties as assigned.
Graduation from high school or a GED and two years of laboratory experience OR two years of college including courses in the cell biology and molecular or organismal biology, physics, or bioengineering, and one year of laboratory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Ability to work with mammalian cell lines, Toxoplasma gondii, and Schistosoma mansoni as research model systems, including experience culturing cells or organisms, passaging cells, and generating transgenic strains/lines.
Knowledge of microscopy of cells or organisms: preparing samples for fixed and live imaging, using fluorescence microscopes, and analyzing imaging data in ImageJ or with other computational tools.
Experience with standard molecular biology techniques, including molecular cloning, immunoblotting, qPCR, and immunofluorescence.
Skill to use general laboratory equipment including centrifuges, balances, autoclaves, and pH meters.
Ability to follow established lab protocols and lab procedures and to maintain accurate records of scientific data.
Excellent verbal, written, and electronic communication skills. Ability in using tact, diplomacy, discretion, and flexibility with diverse personalities and situations. Demonstrated ability to work as part of a research team and interact effectively with collaborating labs and others in scientific community.
Effective organizational and administrative skills. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Interpersonal communication skills including tact, diplomacy, and flexibility with students, staff, faculty, and visitors of various cultures and backgrounds.
Skill and knowledge to proactively maintain an organized lab and stocks of essential supplies and media, purchase new equipment, and ensure lab equipment is operating effectively.
Experience in working with computers (Mac and PC) and software using graphics, word processing, spreadsheet, and internet programs with a willingness and ability to update and increase skills and knowledge as needed.
Experience and knowledge of proper handling, storage, and disposal of chemicals, biochemicals, hazardous chemicals, and biohazardous materials including radioactive materials.
Knowledge of Material Safety Data Sheets, hazard communication and Injury and Illness Prevention Program. Knowledge of laboratory safety precautions including appropriate clothing and shoes, safe handling of chemicals, use of protective items such as gloves and goggles, etc. Knowledge of safety procedures using chemicals and radioactive materials.
Willingness and demonstrated ability to embrace and consistently uphold the principles of community for a collaborative work environment
Knowledge of purchasing and reimbursement procedures. Commitment to excellence in organizational maintenance of purchasing records and monitoring of lab expenditures.
Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $44,662 - $52,513 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $21.39 - $25.15
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
