KPNC Postdoctoral Fellowship Position in HIV Epidemiology Research

The Division of Research (DOR) within Kaiser Permanente Northern California (KPNC) seeks a
Postdoctoral Fellow to join an active research team focused on the epidemiology of human
immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and other infectious diseases. This opportunity will provide the
experience and skills to develop an independently funded research program and to conduct impactful scholarly research to enhance the delivery of evidence-based care to people with HIV.
Researchers within the KPNC DOR draw on rich clinical data derived from a comprehensive, state-of-the-art electronic health record and enjoy direct access to a diverse population of ~4.6 million members. The DOR currently includes 67 scientists, 11 Postdoctoral Fellows, and >600 staff who are organized into 7 scientific sections: Behavioral Health and Aging; Cancer; Cardiovascular and Metabolic Conditions; Healthcare Delivery and Policy; Infectious Diseases; Women’s and Children’s Health; and Biostatistics. The Behavioral Health and Aging and Infectious Diseases (BHA&ID) sections have a single Associate Director and will be the primary home for the Fellow. DOR investigators are primarily supported by external grant funding from federal and other sources, especially the National Institutes of Health. The scientists in DOR’s BHA&ID section (currently 15 scientists, 1 staff scientist, 2 Fellows, and 3 adjunct investigators from KPNC and the University of California, San Francisco) are internationally respected for their innovative, high-impact research. DOR is fully invested in providing Fellows with the training, tools, and support they need for establishing their own path to an independent research career. Specifically, DOR offers several specialized training programs, including the Early Stage Scientist Training Program, Delivery Science Fellowship Program, and the Postdoctoral Translational Research Fellowship Program, each of which provide a broad range of training activities including networking, seminars, and works-in-progress sessions. Many of these activities are open to all early-stage investigators, including Fellows.
The Fellow will join an established, collegial team of infectious disease and behavioral health
researchers with extensive experience conducting epidemiologic studies involving primary data
collection and data-only studies. The team is involved in long-term multidisciplinary research projects with collaborations with other Kaiser Permanente regions and external academic institutions. The Fellow will contribute to a diverse research portfolio that is focused on unique medical challenges faced by the aging cohort of people with HIV, including the risk and prognosis of age-related comorbidities. The team is also conducting research evaluating HIV prevention methods, cervical cancer screening, and transgender health, providing ample exposure to a broad range of topics.
Required qualifications include a PhD or equivalent degree in epidemiology, public health, health
services, or related field, or an MD with an MPH or other formal research training. Candidates should have evidence of first-authored peer-reviewed publications in the medical field and interest or expertise in infectious disease research. The initial position term is two years with the possibility of extension.
