Project Title

An Investigation of the Transport Behavior and Treatment Potential of Per- and polyfluoroalkyl

substances (PFAS) Compounds in Porous Media

Description

This position is for an undergraduate research assistant for Spring and Summer of 2023. The research project is focusing on the behavior of a class of contaminants, called PFAS, in aquatic and soil environments. This project will a variety of research skills, namely literature review skills, academic writing skills, computational modeling skills, as well as some laboratory work, if conditions allow. All these skills are required at an introductory level, and the RA will be guided through the research work by the supervisors. This project has direct connection with the fields of environmental chemistry, and environmental engineering and management. The RA will be expected to present their work at an academic conference in the following academic year. The activities to be completed will include:

  • Reviewing scientific literature on methods for PFAS treatment and behavior in the environment.

  • Developing methodology for conducting computational and laboratory experiments to assess removal capacity of PFAS in natural and engineered soils

  • Performing preliminary computational modeling work to determine properties of contaminant and properties of soil media used.  This will lead to data analysis necessary prior to running laboratory experiments. 

Qualifications: 

  • Completion of General Chemistry I and II with a grade A or above.

  • Completion of Calculus I or above with a grade A or above.

  • Experience in technical writing and presentation

  • Interest in interdisciplinary science

Total Hours: Variable
