Position Overview

The Science Outreach Manager of the Kansas Geological Survey (KGS) at the University of Kansas (KU) invites applications for a KGS Science Outreach Summer Research Assistantship position for the summer of 2024. The position is available for upper-level undergraduates, recent graduates, or graduate students with an interest in science education and/or science communication. The KGS Outreach section oversees activities including publications, online and K-12 educational resources, public field trips, and KGS exhibits at local conferences and events.
NOTE:  Candidates with the appropriate U.S. work authorization will be considered.

FIRST REVIEW DATE:  February 29, 2024, with a hard deadline of March 6, 2024. 

Start Date:   Start the week of June 2, 2024 (flexible based on student schedule)

SALARY:  Interns will be paid $15/hour with an anticipated 12-week, full-time work schedule.  Expenses of travel to and from Lawrence are not provided. All work-related travel expenses will be provided by the Kansas Geological Survey.


Job Description

This assistantship is a 12-week summer position during which interns will work with KGS outreach and communications personnel. Projects that the intern may contribute to during the summer include the development of earth science toolkits for K-12 classrooms, scanning in historical photos, and creating videos highlighting geoscience sites across the state.

  • 40% - Building earth science toolkits that address topics on rock identification, fossil identification, careers in the geosciences, and topographic map exercises.
  • 30% - Creating video and website information highlighting geoscience sites in Kansas.
  • 30% - Scanning historical photos, developing a photo database, and assigning keywords.

Required Qualifications

  • Enrolled in or completion of an undergraduate and/or graduate degree program in Geology or Earth Sciences.
  • Interest in science communication as evidenced by coursework and application materials.
  • Clear communication skills as evidenced by application materials.
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint as evidenced by application materials.

  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with any of the duties described above.
  • Coursework in paleontology and petrology.
  • Experience with photography and/or videography.
