Job Summary

Under general direction of the Manager of Maintenance Management, apply knowledge and expertise in working from written and/or verbal instructions and established procedures to accomplish assigned tasks. Perform duties involved in the maintenance and alteration of door lock hardware for campus buildings and structures. Provide leadership to support Lock Shop staff. Responsible for daily operation budget and the administration of the key and lock control system.

This is a Campus Critical position. An employee designated as campus critical is expected to be aware of the campus emergency management plan and to report to Campus as soon as possible in the event of an emergency to assist in campus wide response and recovery efforts.

Essential Job Duties

In coordination and cooperation with other trades and shops, perform various locksmith duties that include but are not limited to the following:

  • Responsible for following all safety procedures and maintaining a safe and secure work environment.
  • Manages the key and lock control software.
  • Manage operational and project budgets.
  • Plan and develop a preventive maintenance plan.
  • Work closely with all departments and divisions to deliver world class service, on time and on budget.
  • Daily management of IWMS processes.
  • Oversees installations, repairs, rebuilds, and services mechanical or electrical locking devices.
  • Proficient in using hand tools and special equipment necessary for the daily operation of the shop.
  • Oversees disassembly of door locks and repairs or replaces worn tumblers, springs, and other parts.
  • Oversees the repair of wood and metal doors and door frames.
  • Oversees installation and repairs to door closures including ADA operators.
  • Oversees the duplication and cuts a large volume of keys as needed including MEDECO keys.
  • Servicing Safe’s and Safe combination changes.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and follow basic maintenance procedures of various locks.
  • Makes minor repairs as requested on work orders in a timely, accurate manner.
  • Oversees the assistance to carpenters and other trades in the repair of doors and electronic systems that affect the proper latching and locking to maintain security of the campus.
  • Responds to trouble calls, emergency conditions and analyze routine work requests for timely execution and completion.
  • Perform day-to-day shop supervisory responsibilities including scheduling shop technician work orders and attending meetings.
  • Review specification and plans for major replacement and repairs.
  • Provide estimates of material and time costs for various repairs and projects on Campus.
  • Work with outside contractors and vendors as required to keep Campus building keying and hardware standards in place.
  • Order and maintain stock of all types of building hardware, electronics and specialty items including keys, door closures, restroom and window hardware.
  • Maintain charges for material used for jobs from shop stock to departmental accounts.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED. A minimum of 10 years of relevant work experience as lead locksmith or in lock shop settings.
  • 3 years of supervisory experience and/or demonstrated increase or progression of responsibilities including training and mentoring entry level staff.
  • Basic understanding or familiarity with budgeting projects.
  • Basic mechanical skills.
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds daily.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with all members of the Caltech community, both in writing and verbally.
  • Knowledge of general power tools.
  • Must be able to stoop, bend, pull, and kneel throughout the workday.
  • Software proficiency in MS Word, Excel, MS Project, E-Builder and Outlook.
  • Ability to work independently and follow through on assignments.
  • Must be able to successfully pass all applicable clearance requirements.
  • Must possess valid California driver’s license upon hire and maintain a valid California driver’s license throughout the course of employment. Must be able to adhere to the Institute’s Motor Vehicle Use policy.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5 years of related work experience at Caltech or in a university or facilities setting is a plus.
  • Certificate of completion or formal training from accredited trade school
  • Proficiency with AiM (Asset Works) and Kronos or similar preventive maintenance and timekeeping software would be a plus.
