Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
The University of Maryland Department of Geographical Sciences is among the world’s leading academic units dedicated towards tackling society’s most pressing concerns. Our internationally renowned experts bring satellite data processing and geospatial technologies to the forefront of scientific discovery. Through our research and teaching, our faculty, staff, and students advance cutting-edge solutions for climate change, biodiversity, wildfire, food security, global health, sustainability, and poverty. We are searching for a Junior Systems Administrator to help us design a path toward implementing new technologies to meet the Department’s growing needs.
This position is a 12-month, full-time status. This position offers excellent benefits, including but not limited to health insurance, a generous leave package from the first year (accrued at 22 days annual leave, 3 days personal leave & 14 days sick leave), retirement subsidy (ORP/Pension), tuition remission and professional development opportunities.
The salary range for this position has been established from $80,000 to $100,000 per year, depending on qualifications. The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to internal equity, experience, education, specialty, and training. This position has flexible work hours with the possibility of working two days a week from home. GEOG promotes growth in individuals and a healthy work-life balance within a collaborative culture.
Duties:
We are looking for someone to join our team and work with us to manage the day-to-day IT issues in support of our cutting-edge research and teaching.
The candidate should have excellent problem-solving, communication, and troubleshooting skills, as well as be able to work well in a team as well as independently.
The position will involve being the first level of support for the Department’s IT infrastructure, which includes Windows and Apple endpoints, Linux and Windows servers, account management, troubleshooting, various web applications and services, updates, and other tasks as necessary.
Existing Technologies:
The Systems Administrator will help support the department’s VMware VDI, Web servers, Hadoop clusters, SFTP servers, and database servers, including distributed computing, associated storage, security, patching, and automation of configuration and deployment. The tasks will include provisioning new systems, OS patches and managing backups and configuration states for our workstations, clusters, and servers. You will also help us troubleshoot existing systems, ensuring system security, maximum uptime, and service stability.

Minimum Qualifications:
Required Education:
Bachelor’s Degree plus one year of full-time experience as a faculty specialist or equivalent position.
Required Experience:
  • One year experience with Linux or Windows administration/support
  • Basic experience with networking, switches, and TCP/IP

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Proficiency with high-level programming languages such as Python, Perl, Bash
Preferences:
Preferences:
  • Experience with Apache https and/or tomcat
  • Experience with GeoServer and/or the ESRI ArcGIS stack
  • Experience with VMWare vCenter, KVM/libvert and/or commercial Cloud providers
  • Experience with PC laptops or desktops, and/or PC server server, and or Mac systems.
  • Experience troubleshooting basic networking problems.
  • An ability and a desire to learn, adapt and grow as a member of the GEOG IT team.
