Facilities Services invites applications for a Journeyman Carpenter to perform skilled, rough, and finished carpentry in maintenance, repair and new construction projects on campus.

Responsibilities: 

  • Install, maintain, and repair floors including carpet and hardwood floor
  • Install, maintain, and repair stairways and ADA ramps
  • Construct small building structures and wall additions in existing rooms
  • Install, repair, construct and maintain classroom and office furniture including visual display boards, projection screens, tables, chairs, shelves, benches, fixed seating and upholstered furniture
  • Install, repair, construct and maintain building fixture including windows and door frames
  • Repair glass and glazing material in windows and doors
  • Install and repair Venetian blinds, draperies, roller shades, acoustical ceilings, walls, mini blinds, and black out shades
  • Install, repair, construct and maintain cabinets, countertops, partitions and other various fixtures
  • Install and hang a variety of art projects, paintings, signage and pictures
  • Assess, maintain and repair roofing of buildings
  • Install, repair, construct and maintain concrete forms
  • Coordinate work between contractors and Planning, Design & Construction Department to ensure work is complete
  • Operation of various hand tools
  • Operation of various power tools including table saws, skill saws, miter saw, stationary and hand-held grinders, drill press, rotary hammers, wood lathe, pneumatic tools, powder actuated tools, planer, jointer, surface sander and jigsaw
  • Operation of Genie Lift, scissor lifts, articulating lift, scaffolding and ladders
  • Minor equipment maintenance and repair
  • Read and follow blue prints and sketches
  • Comply with ADA Codes and Fire Codes
  • Record keeping of projects as assigned
  • Ability to operate vehicle with lift as needed
  • Operate handheld tablets and radios
  • Basic knowledge of computers
  • Keep detailed and accurate records including time and materials used on projects
  • Inventory control
  • Assist Lock Shop when needed in carpenter duties and responsibilities
  • Any additional duties assigned by Carpenter Foreman

Physical Requirements

(Qualified candidates must be able to meet minimum requirements and perform the primary functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.)

  • Lifting:   Ground to 36 inches, up to 60 pounds. Ground to overhead, up to 50 pounds.
  • Carrying:   Front carry up to 60 pounds for 10 feet. One-hand carry, up to 42 pounds, for 10 feet, and up a flight of stairs.
  • Pushing and pulling forces required (during the use of tools):  50 pounds sustained. 
  • Static trunk forward bending and twisting from a standing, crouching or kneeling position while using tools.
  • Reaching with your arms in all directions, including overhead continuously, for at least 3 minutes.
  • Working in various positions (standing, squatting, kneeling, crouching, and crawling).
  • Balancing when climbing and working on a ladder or scaffold, or personnel lift.
  • Use of various grip circumferences and strengths as well as static grip positions during the use of various tools (4 1/2" to 5 1/2" circumference needing an average of 35 pounds of grip force) and while manipulating various work materials (maximum 50 pounds).
  • Manual steadiness, dexterity, speed, and coordination:
    • Arm-Hand Steadiness — The ability to keep your hand and arm steady while moving your arm or while holding your arm and hand in one position.
    • Manual Dexterity — The ability to quickly move your hand, your hand together with your arm, or your two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects.
    • Wrist-Finger Speed — The ability to make fast, simple, repeated movements of the fingers, hands, and wrists.

Physical Screen will be administered prior to a final offer of employment.


Minimum Required Experience
  • High School diploma or equivalent education
  • Possess a current driver’s license
  • Completion of carpentry apprenticeship program or three (3) years of progressively responsible carpenter experience or a combination of experience and education that provides an individual the required skills, knowledge, and abilities to successfully complete the assigned duties and responsibilities associated with the position

Preferred Qualifications
  • Five (5) years Journeyman Carpenter experience
  • Experience that provides an individual the required skills, knowledge, and abilities to successfully complete the assigned duties and responsibilities associated with the position
  • Ability to maintain appropriate records
  • Demonstrated skill in the operation of personal computers
  • Working knowledge of ADA Codes and Fire Codes
  • Knowledge of purchasing and inventory practices and procedures

     Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, 12 months/year

Salary:                          $27.94/hr

Union Affiliation:         Southwest Mountain States Regional Council of Carpenters

Probationary Period:  Six months minimum
