The Business Systems Manager 1 is responsible for the support of the Pre and Post Award Research Administration. The function is critical to provide system support to the office of Research, the research Clusters, and the Controller's office. Responsibilities include coordinating all core applications that support the financial and administrative components of the Research.
Administration System (RAS) proposals, awards, contracts, projects, billing, receivables and reporting. This currently includes primary management of 6 integrated PeopleSoft RAS modules and collaborative engagement with systems manager for related applications, including General Ledger, Payables, Student Information System, PowerFAIDs (Student Financial Aid system), and other applications RAS integrates with currently or in the future. 

The Business Systems Manager 1 is responsible for managing a team of Business Analysts providing daily production support and the implementation of new systems, upgrades, and enhancements to current systems.

This responsibility requires significant interaction (frequently/ daily) with several technical campus units and virtually all UCSF Schools and Departments.

The RAS Business Systems Manager works with the other Systems Managers as a team to ensure the successful implementation of software maintenance, new implementation, and support of all RAS systems. The supported modules and business processes are subject to change due to organizational needs, and managerial responsibilities will be realigned when needed.
UCSF is currently in the process of evaluating and transitioning to a cloud ERP system (Oracle or Workday) and the Business System Manager is expected to play a key role in business transformation and transition to cloud.

Department Description

IT- The Business Informatics and Analysis Department Information team supports Health and campus-wide business applications for all HR, CRM, Learning Solutions, Financials, Supply Chain, Research and Student information systems.
We ensure the day-to-day operation of these systems and the implementation of new enhancements due to organizational needs.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience with an emphasis in computer science, data processing, computer information systems, or a related field.
  • Minimum 6+ years of related experience and 5+ years of manager experience
  • In-depth knowledge of PeopleSoft modules or other Pre and Post awards system Student Financials  and the integration of the various components
  • Demonstrated success in serving as a team lead in a large and complex long-term business reengineering and/or administrative systems project.
  • Demonstrated ability to participate in the planning and coordinating of a complex support project with tasks, timelines, and budgets.
  • Knowledge of Technologies involved (i.e., databases, operating systems, reporting tools, and hardware) with a strong functional knowledge of system applications.
  • Leadership skills, functional and technical knowledge, global perspective, responsiveness to departmental needs, and the ability to facilitate decisions without total consensus.
  • Leadership skills proven result in collaboration and participation with major campus and outside stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 6-8 years of experience in an organization comparable to UCSF in terms of budget, size, complexity, and  scope of operation is required to effectively  manage, understand and answer the difficult functional and technical questions associated with UC RAS systems
  • Typically 2-5 years of experience managing an information technology organization.
  • Knowledge of PeopleSoft table structure and functional business knowledge of other ERP and reporting systems are necessary to come up with reporting solution recommendations
  • Functional experience in full life cycle project setting with experience in higher education applications and PeopleSoft or similar ERP system Implementations
  • Understanding of how IT currently functions and departmental needs at UCSF or similar institutions will be required to lead project improvements
