The Irrigation Specialist maintains, repairs, services, and installs campus irrigation systems including appropriate adjustments to the computerized irrigations controllers.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Maintains and repairs irrigation systems including valves, lateral and main lines, controllers, and related equipment. Makes adjustments to irrigation systems as needed. Provides direction to groundsworkers engaged in routine sprinkler maintenance and repairs. May perform emergency repair work on irrigation system. May use light equipment to perform duties.
  • Maintains, repairs, services, and installs automatic and computerized sprinkler control devices making minor repairs on sprinkler control devices.
  • Establish and maintain sprinkler system preventative maintenance programs.
  • Design irrigation systems, select irrigation products, estimate costs, and install or modify sprinkler systems. Review landscaped areas and coordinate the installation of new sprinkler systems and the modification of existing sprinkler systems, taking into consideration water - plant - soil relationships.
  • Program and schedule the Calsesne irrigation as needed for special events and other irrigation needs.
  • Work closely with contractors installing sprinkler systems around new structures to assure proper watering capabilities of the system.
  • Prepare and revise irrigation designs and other plans to show location of pipes, valves, sprinkler heads, and water pressure.
  • May preform inventory and order supplies for irrigation work.
  • May perform Groundsworker duties on occasion.
  • Other classification-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications: Required Education and Experience
  • Two years of experience in the care and maintenance of landscaped areas or general grounds, with one year in the maintenance, repair, or modification of irrigation systems and irrigation equipment.
  • A valid California driver's license.

Required Qualifications
  • Thorough knowledge of the soil conditions of the various areas of the campus; climate of the area in which the campus is located; and the mechanical principles of sprinkler equipment. General knowledge of the kinds of sprinkler control devices and irrigation equipment available on the market.
  • Ability to plan, estimate costs, and install or modify irrigation systems for particular sections of the campus; repair and maintain existing irrigation systems; operate equipment, such as small trench-diggers; provide lead work direction to others; and read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of irrigation repair and maintenance; computerized irrigation controllers; and the use of light equipment like trench-diggers.
  • Understanding of plant-soil-water relationships.

Compensation and Benefits:
Anticipated Hiring Range: $3,544 per month
Classification Salary Range: $3,544 - $5,782 per month
The salary offered will take into account internal equity and experience among other factors.
The CSU system provides a comprehensive benefit package that includes medical, dental and vision plans, membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), sick and vacation time, and 14 paid holidays a year. Position Information:
Work status: Full-time/Non-Exempt/Probationary
Academic year schedule: Monday through Friday (6:00 am - 2:30 pm), some evenings/weekends.

Background Check
Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

Possession of a valid Driver's License is required. Employees in this position will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice Program which confirms possession of a valid driver's license and reflects driving record.
