Position O verview
This full-time, salaried position will provide support services to South Asian INTO UAB students to enhance their university experience, assist them with adjustment issues, build connections to the university and provide translation services as needed. The Advisor is responsible for planning and executing special meetings and activities for all INTO UAB students. Building and maintaining strong relationships with campus partners including faculty, staff and student organizations is a must.
The Advisor also accompanies students to appointments when necessary and consults with the Student Experience Director as needed.
This position reports directly to the Director of Student Experience for INTO UAB.
Key Accountabilities and Duties
Provide basic guidance and advising to students and making appropriate referrals to students in need to appropriate campus resources.
Connect with applicants and incoming students to provide timely and accurate information in response to their inquiries.
Work closely with the student engagement team on issues involving INTO UAB students. This will involve informal interpretation and translation services for students in emergencies, conduct hearings, orientation, and classroom situations.
Maintain good communication with parents, sponsors and agents in accordance with FERPA, regarding academic progress, health and safety issues, incidents, and various problems.
Develop educational programs to ease cultural adjustment for students.
Act as a cultural liaison between campus and INTO UAB students.
Provide support, which may include presentations and/or workshops, for other internal units, campus partners, and the community.
Work with Director of Academic Programs to address issues of Attendance/Academic Warning/Probation/Suspension to provide proactive education programs and responsive care.
Represent INTO UAB on social media and other web platforms commonly used by Indian applicants and students.
Work with INTO UAB Student Engagement team on arrival, orientation and student activities.
Assist the Director of Student Experience on other duties as assigned

Qualifications and Experience
Demonstrated ability working as a member of a team
Demonstrated experience with student issues and demands
Demonstrated experience working with students from diverse cultural backgrounds
Deep understanding of the Indian academic culture
Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication and organizational skills
Understanding of US higher education
Computer and electronic communication literacy
Effectively communicate with a wide variety of stakeholders including student sponsors
Proficiency in languages spoken in India
Master's Degree in Counseling, Higher Education or related field
Living experience abroad and foreign language competence preferred
Demonstrated commitment to promoting and enhancing social justice
Experience with student programming
Ties to local Indian/International communities in Birmingham and surrounding areas
Significant experience in data systems preferred, including Banner and/or Salesforce
INTO UAB is located in Birmingham, Alabama. International travel may be required and the incumbent must be able to travel freely to and from the United States.
