Job Summary
Eastern Washington University is currently seeking skilled and team-oriented applicants for the following position International Student Advisor/SEVIS Coordinator in our Global Unit.
Under the oversight of the Executive Director of Global Student Services, this position will advise students while helping them identify academic and engagement opportunities that meet their personal and academic objectives. This position also processes related forms (paper and electronic), communicates with students, assists in problem resolution throughout the duration of their time at EWU and assists students preparing to return home. The International Student Advisor is responsible for all SEVIS-related compliance issues for international students. This position acts as a liaison for international students between university offices, student organizations and community organizations. This position may also assume additional administrative responsibilities as assigned, in a multifunction office for international student outreach and support. Outstanding interpersonal skills, to include stellar listening abilities and superior written and verbal communication are required for success in this position.

Required Qualifications
  • Master’s degree (any field).
  • Two (2) years of experience in academic coaching, academic advising, or related field; working with groups and/or individuals setting and completing goals, and encouraging persistence and resilience.
  • Work experience utilizing philosophy or theory-based practices to facilitate student success inside and outside of the classroom.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a positive collaborative manner to build partnerships and work effectively in a fast-paced, high-stress university/college system.
  • Demonstrated experience using computer technologies such as databases, internet, spreadsheets, tracking systems, and word processing.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and time while under pressure to meet deadlines.
  • Professional experience with programs that provide services to students from underrepresented and/or first generation populations.
  • Bilingual ability (in both print and spoken language).
  • Demonstrated success in working with culturally-and linguistically-diverse students.
  • Experience supporting students in a higher education context.
  • Demonstrated ability using a student-focused approach.
  • Demonstrated interest, ability and/or experience promoting cultural competency, universal accessibility, and/or diversity.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in related fields such as adult education. academic advising, or academic coaching.
  • Professional teaching and advising experience of students in a college or university setting which includes a focus on advising, persistence, retention, or student success programs.

    • Advise international students by helping them identify academic and engagement opportunities that meet their personal and academic objectives
    • Respond to all inquiries in a timely manner and proactively seek solutions to challenges
    • Under the guidance of the Director of Global Student Services, partner with EWU Dean of Students office to resolve and notify appropriate parties regarding any student experience issues, as appropriate
    • Serve as a liaison between university offices, student organizations, and community organizations
    • In cooperation with General Undergraduate Academic Advising and academic departments, advise students on their academic program requirements and develop academic course plans
    • Under the direction of the Director of Global Student Services, notify and collaborate with appropriate EWU academic department representatives to ensure timely processing and resolution of student issues

    SEVIS Immigration Compliance, Processing, and Advising
    • Serve as a Designated School Official (DSO) or Primary Designated School Official (PSDO) and Alternative Responsible Officer (ARO) or Responsible Officer (RO) for Eastern Washington University
    • As a DSO/PDSO and ARO/RO, provide guidance on foreign visa regulations, issue l-20s and DS2019s, maintain records, conduct ongoing F-1 and J-1 advising and completion of related forms and compliance
    • Liaise with and respond to requests from government agencies, sponsoring organizations, and foreign embassies to facilitate visa documentation and employment authorization for international students and exchange visitors
    • Provide all reporting required by SEVP and other organizations (e.g., Open Doors)
    • Ensure all SEVP (Student and Exchange Visitor Program) renewal and recertification deadlines are met.

    Retention and Other Programmatic Activities
    • In partnership with Student Affairs, continue to integrate international students into campus-wide orientation and welcome week activities
    • Plan and promote annual calendar of cultural activities, including on and off-campus events; serve as advisor to the International Student Association (ISA)
    • Conduct quarterly immigration orientation sessions for international undergraduate/graduate students; conduct quarterly transition sessions for international students moving from English Language Institute studies into academic programs
    • Plan and execute quarterly immigration, employment, internship (OPT/CPT) and tax workshops
    • Assist in the development and implementation of EWU policies and procedures related to EWU Global operations and activities
    • Provide guidance to faculty and staff on departmental programs’ compliance with state and federal laws, EWU policies and procedures as needed.
