Unit Mission Statement
The mission of the Department of Modern Languages & Literatures is to foster teaching, research, and public service as an integral part of education linked through programs designed to preserve, transmit, and expand knowledge.
Position Summary
The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures offers courses in Arabic,
Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian and Hispanic languages,
literatures and cultures. Integral to these programs are the “Languages Houses,” where resident native speakers, or International Fellows, encourage active use of their native languages and assist student residents in organizing and/or supporting cultural activities that include but are not limited to, weekly conversation hours for different levels of student speakers, foreign film nights, cultural celebrations, cooking classes, and sports competitions between Houses. Students in these houses are expected to speak the target language in their normal social encounters in the house. The International Fellow has educational/cultural, public relations/liaison, and administrative responsibilities while living in the House. The Fellow will work with the Faculty Advisor to coordinate House activities that meet the needs of the residents and extend the academic curriculum of the program. The Fellow may be asked to assist the language section in organizing receptions for visiting speakers or artists, lectures, film studies, dinners, study abroad orientations and other joint events held either in the House, on campus or in the community. The International Fellow is expected to work at the minimum of 20 hours and no more than 29 hours per week as per state policy.
The Department is recruiting a pool of persons for possible part-time International Fellow positions for Arabic Studies Program. This pool will be accessed ONLY when an opening arises. Your credentials will remain active as long as the pool position is available but no more than one year. After the pool closes and if you are still interested, you must reapply to the most current adjunct pool. If you have previously submitted an application for an instructional position at William & Mary via the online system your existing application documents can be easily transferred to this position pool. Required Qualifications
A master’s degree in education or related field is required. Native speaker in Arabic.
Demonstrated ability to communicate in English.
Preferred Qualifications
Some familiarity with the U.S. Academic System; prior experience with American undergraduate students.
