Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

The College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University is now accepting applications for an Intern with a focus in Food Animal and Theriogenology services at the Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center (LVMC) and the ISU Food Animal Veterinary Field Service (FA VFS). The LVMC and FA VFS offers a Rotating Food Animal and Theriogenology internship designed to prepare interns for an in-depth training in Food Animal veterinary specialty practice and advanced mobile veterinary medicine. Our programs strive to prepare trainees for active careers in academia, specialty practice, or for further pursuit of a residency program.  The intern program is one year in duration that is clinically based and focused on food animal veterinary medicine.

Interns will follow specific program guidelines and may rotate through various internal and external specialty areas specific to their program’s requirements setup by the FA Rotating and Theriogenology mentors and approved by the House Officer Committee.  Interns are expected to provide backup and/or primary duties in daily appointments, emergency cases, along with weekend and after-hours obligations. Interns will also participate in both didactic and clinical teaching of veterinary students.  Interns additionally participate in clinical rounds, seminars, journal clubs, continuing educational programs, and various section and departmental academic programs. Attendance and participation in the seminar component of the training program is required by all house officers. 

The Food Animal and Theriogenology services is operated by 3 boarded ACT practitioners, 2 boarded ABVP practitioners, 1 boarded ACVIM practitioner, 1 boarded ACVPM practitioner, and 4 other board eligible faculty members, along with 5 post doc and residents within services, a faculty embryologist, and dedicated full-time service staff.


Required Minimum Qualifications:
  • DVM or equivalent degree from an AVMA accredited veterinary college, or have successfully completed the AVMA ECFVG Certification Program or the PAVE Certification Program upon employment start date.

  • Registration with the Iowa Board of Pharmacy in compliance with the Controlled Substances Registration Act will be required prior to clinical practice.

  • Licensure by the State of Iowa Board of Veterinary Medicine upon employment start date.  


Department/Program & College Description:

 The LVMC is a state-of-the-art facility designed to provide specialized care and comprehensive medical and surgical services for companion and large animals throughout Iowa and surrounding states. In addition, our food animal veterinary field service unit provides routine and specialty care to all food animal clientele in the surrounding 50 mile radius. Our clinicians, residents, interns, technicians, staff, and senior veterinary students work collaboratively to provide 24-hour, high-quality care to animal patients.

Iowa State University is a teaching institution, which requires direct interaction with 4th year veterinary students. The intern is expected to assist with student teaching, rounds, and case workup – including accuracy of medical reporting.
Through rapidly growing case-loads, exceptional diagnostic resources, and expanding faculty and support staff, this program is expected to provide the intern with a broad knowledge of Food Animal and Theriogenology veterinary medicine, and the potential to continue their advanced postgraduate education in residency training through the American College of Theriogenology (ACT), American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM), American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine (ACVPM), American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (ABVP), or American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP).
