Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking an Instrument Specialist (Machinist) for the School of Engineering.
Among the key duties of the position are the following:
  • Provides equipment design in collaboration with the Energy Storage Research Group, then devise the best way to produce the item that meets the team requirements.
  • Fabricates precisely engineered custom pieces, parts, and tools to be used in equipment or to facilitate other process in the laboratories.
  • Other duties include setting up, maintain and repair of equipment to maintain good operation of the laboratory.
  • Designs, develops, and maintains scientific research and specialized teaching instrumentation.
  • Requires training users on the proper use of machine equipment and oversight of their operations and safety.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Requires a bachelor’s degree preferably in Engineering or a closely related discipline or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Also requires a minimum of two years’ of related experience.

Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of general engineering design process and associated tools/equipment.
  • Machine tool skills on milling machine, lathe, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize basic drafting programs to translate the material needs into electronic design and into machine language code for milling operations.
  • Excellent communication skills to communicate and interact effectively with staff and students to extract needs and translate into design and finished product.
  • Ability to diagnose and repair laboratory equipment.
  • Maintain small vacuum pumps and equipment which require routine maintenance.
  • PC computer operation.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Moderate electronics wiring skills and circuit design.
  • 3-D printing experience.
  • Experience on HAAS CNC Machine tools.
  • Advanced machining skills / history and material knowledge.
Equipment Utilized
  • Mill, Lathe, Basic Drafting.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Must be able to lift metal stock and move compressed air tanks.
