INSTRUMENT AND CONTROL TECHNICIAN - SEBLAB - (T215223)

Description

 

The primary accountabilities below are intended to describe the general content of and requirements of this position and are not intended to be an exhaustive statement of duties.  

To plan and conduct independent work requiring judgment in the evaluation, selection, application and adaptation of instrumentation and control techniques, procedures and criteria. To devise new approaches to problems, and prepare or modify drawings, specifications, calculations, charts and graphs, and monitor work for compliance to applicable codes, accepted engineering practices and UAB standards. To read, understand and interpret blueprints, drawings, floor plans, schedules and manufacturer's operating and/or maintenance specifications as they relate to electrical, mechanical, plumbing, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) and special equipment, building structures and finishes. To maintains and perform tests, calibrations, evaluations repairs, modifications, replacements and installations on HVAC, chiller and boiler control systems and devices to include pneumatic, electrical, electronic and direct digital control systems. To respond to requests from architects, engineers, energy managers, building occupants and others regarding testing, evaluating, calibrating and documenting mechanical and electrical controls and metering systems. To perform the work of other maintenance personnel or to assist in the completion of their work to include HVAC Mechanics, Electricians, Central Plant Mechanics, etc. To perform other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned or directed by Division management and supervision.

 

Essential Accountabilities:

·        Maintains, repairs, modifies, places, installs and performs routine and preventive maintenance on a wide variety of light and heavy duty heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment for existing facilities and those under renovation.

·        Reads, understands and interprets blueprints, drawings, floor plans, schedules and manufacturer's operating and/or maintenance specifications as they relate to electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and special equipment, building structures and finishes.

·        Designs, develops, installs, manages and/or maintains equipment which is used to monitor and control engineering systems, machinery and processes.

·        Commissions and validates control systems and mechanical systems.

·        Performs assignments independently with instruction as to the general results expected and with guidance from Department Manager and or engineering specialist on unusual or complex problems.

·        Works collaboratively with design engineers, operation engineers and internal staff providing technical direction and consultation when needed.

·        Assumes lead technician's role on assigned projects. Produces project progress reports as requested and plans, schedules, conducts and coordinates program of assigned technical work and projects. Assists in selection of discipline personnel assigned to projects.

·        Analyzes reports, maps, drawings, tests and other data to plan and design work. Reviews and reports on construction issue drawing packages ensuring that UAB standards are being followed.

·        Reviews bid analyses and makes recommendations.

·        Performs other duties as assigned.

·       Carries out duties within the scope of University policies and procedures. Analyzes problems, adapts guidelines, and exercises independent judgment within accepted practices. Makes recommendations that impact policies, procedures, and practices, referring exceptions to the supervisor.

·       Develops objectives and procedures for a specific program or area of responsibility. Day-to-day work and decisions do not need direct supervision but are reviewed by the supervisor. Refers strategic issues to the supervisor.

·       Develops strategic goals, plans, and policies for a specific area of responsibility. Sets broad objectives and is responsible for overall results. Has the authority to make independent decisions on significant matters. Requires a high degree of independent judgment and problem-solving for complex issues.

 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

·         Ability to use industrial programmable logic controls or industrial distributed control systems

·         Ability to use control system components in a system

·         Ability to calibrate analog input transmitters using a decade box and multi-meter

·         Knowledge of the sequence of operation to control a valve operator

·         Knowledge of analog/digital output and input terminations for a controller

·         Knowledge and experience with trades mathematics, trades communications, electronics, pneumatic, electronic and electric HVAC controls

·         Knowledge of instrumentation design and engineering techniques

·         CAD skills

·         Ability to work as part of a team

·         Must be able to work independently

·         Ability to use personal computer, related software and familiarity with industrial computer systems, motor control. PLCs and DCSs

·         Ability to read/produce electrical schematics

·         Knowledge of ISA Standards and TCP/IP and RS232 communication experience as applied to interfacing equipment

·         Ability to read and write well enough to be able to comprehend written and oral instructions

·         Ability to use personal computer, cell phone, tablet or other device

·         Ability to utilize e-mail on a daily basis

  Work Schedule:  Monday - Friday, 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. (Subject to change to meet the needs of the University).  

 

Hourly Pay Range:  $25.25 - $35.00 (Commensurate with experience & qualifications)

 

 

Qualifications

 

Graduate from an approved accredited post-secondary two (2) year vocational or technical school in Electronic, HVAC, or Electrical, OR certification from National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) and six (6) years experience in building automation, electronic or industrial controls required. Work experience may substitute for education requirement.

 

Licenses/Certifications/Registrations

Driving record should meet University underwriting guidelines to drive vehicle in performance of University business. Current underwriting guidelines include possession a valid driver’s license, issued in the United States; at least 21 years of age; at least three years of driving experience; maintain an acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).

 

Physical

Required to possess the necessary physical requirements, with or without the aid of mechanical devices, to safely perform the duties and responsibilities that require performing tasks requiring wearing respirator and other personal protective equipment, such as self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), to include:

·         Lifting and carrying a minimum of fifty (50) pounds.

·         Climbing stairs, ladders and scaffolding, and working at heights above thirty (30) feet.

·         Performing tasks requiring bending, stooping, kneeling, and walking significant distances between and within buildings on campus.

·         Working in confined spaces.

·         Working within extreme temperature ranges.
