Job Summary
The Contemplative Studies Initiative (CSI) program, a part of the College of Liberal Arts, at Oregon State University, invites applications for multiple hourly Contemplative Instructor positions to teach CSI practices during the 2023-2024 academic year. These are professional faculty positions.
The Contemplative Studies Initiative is expanding programming with the opening of a Contemplative Practice Center in downtown Corvallis. The Contemplative Center is located at 648 SW 2nd Street in Corvallis. Instructors will teach contemplative practices and theory, anchored in philosophical traditions and/or research-based principles for non-academic, weekly, or series-based classes. Disciplines and modalities include, but are not limited to, meditation, mindfulness, postural yoga, qigong, contemplative dance, centering prayer, sacred chanting/music, Mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) and Mindful self-compassion (MSC). This is an hourly position. As mutually agreed upon, instructors may typically be assigned to between 1-3 regularly scheduled classes each week, special series classes, and/or workshops and have the opportunity to teach additional classes when substitutes are needed. Classes are offered in short blocks of time throughout the day and week, including late mornings, lunchtime, weekends, and evenings. Classes may be scheduled continuously or based upon the school term. Instructors must teach at least once every six months and/or respond to communications with CSI staff within one month during a period of instructional inactivity in order to maintain employment.

Key Responsibilities
70% Instruction:
Teach the practice, philosophy, and methods of a contemplative discipline in a format conducive to the scheduled sessions. Includes instructional design, class planning, and delivery to effectively meet the needs and abilities of the participants.
10% Customer Service:
Greet clients, process purchase transactions, answer client questions, share about program and center activities. Set a tone for a welcoming, friendly, supportive, inclusive contemplative practice environment.
10% Site Maintenance:
Sweep floors, organize props, contribute to a clean space and a welcoming and tidy aesthetic.
10% Operations:
Follow practice center operating procedures by tracking student sign-in to ensure correct attendance record, leaving follow-up notes for administrative team, opening, and closing building for class sessions, arming/disarming building, turning on and off lights, and securing assets. Maintain regular and timely communication with CSI staff regarding availability, new programming, absences, class scheduling, and client or community issues.
What You Will Need
  • 3+ years academic and/or personal/practical background in contemplative studies or a contemplative practice or tradition.
  • 2+ years in a contemplative teaching role
  • Certifications and/or requisite trainings in contemplative discipline
  • Instructors teaching a physical discipline need to maintain current CPR/AED and First Aid certifications.
  • Exceptional and effective communication skills
  • Exemplify sound decision making.
  • Ability to carefully observe both individual and group activity and effectively respond to a range of needs, abilities, and skill levels.
  • Ability to articulate and describe methods, philosophies. and relevant research-related connections in addition to guiding practices.
  • A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity and inclusion.

What We Would Like You to Have
  • Bachelor’s and/or Master’s and/or Doctoral degrees in relevant disciplines
  • 7+ years academic and/or personal/practical background in contemplative studies or a contemplative practice or tradition.
  • 5+ years in contemplative teaching role
  • Advanced certifications and/or trainings relevant to discipline
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
Depending on proposed practice modality and related material needs, this position may require the ability to demonstrate physical postures and practices for the duration of the class and include lifting, bending, twisting, and climbing a ladder.
Hired instructors may be responsible for checking in students and taking payments when administrative support is not available. Instructors will be compensated for instructional time in addition to a limited duration for class planning, operational duties, and customer service support for each class session.
