General Description / Primary Purpose
The Department of Physics at the University of North Florida is now accepting applications for a permanent, 12-month, non-tenure track, Instructor faculty position to begin in August 2024. Responsibilities include preparing and teaching undergraduate introductory Physics and Astronomy lectures and labs. Ideal candidates would also be able to teach an introductory Earth Science lecture and Lab. Additionally, successful candidates are expected to contribute service to both the university and to the profession. Ideal candidates will have previous, documented experience in teaching undergraduate lectures and laboratory courses in Physics and/or Astronomy. Successful candidates must demonstrate the commitment and capability to provide an excellent learning environment to students, work with student-centered methods of instruction, and contribute to the continuing development and implementation of curricular content. UNF’s Department of Physics is committed to increasing student participation and persistence in STEM fields. The Department also has a strong history of community outreach, and the ideal candidate would contribute to the continuation of those programs. Applicants must describe their experience working with, teaching, and/or mentoring students from a wide variety of backgrounds. The position has a starting salary of $52,000, negotiable, and is a continuing 12-month position. Applicants must have a minimum of a master’s degree in Astronomy, Astrophysics, Physics or a closely related field.

The Department of Physics
The Physics Department offers a bachelor’s degree in physics and has recently launched an interdisciplinary master’s degree program in Materials Science and Engineering. The standard teaching load for non-tenure-earning faculty is four courses in Fall, four courses in Spring, and one course in Summer. The Physics Department is a PhysTEC member, a past host of CUWiP, and participant in the APS-IDEA Network. The Department strives to seek support for new initiatives to bolster pedagogical effectiveness in the classroom through funding from external sponsors. It also has active collaborations with the College of Education and Human Services to implement research-based curricular changes. The department is engaged in several curricular reforms: active learning in introductory and upper-level courses, studio physics, computation in upper-level courses, and ISLE-based techniques in lower-level labs.
