Description

The Department of Linguistics at the University of Chicago invites applications for a full-time, benefits-eligible position of Instructional Professor (open-rank) in Modern Greek language and culture beginning September 1, 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter. The selected candidate will be appointed at the rank of Assistant Instructional Professor, Associate Instructional Professor, or Instructional Professor, depending on qualifications and educational background. The initial appointment will be for a minimum of two years, with longer initial terms possible depending on previous experience and initial rank. Reappointment and progression, if applicable, possible following successful review.

The selected candidate will teach up to seven courses per academic year (the University of Chicago is on a quarter system, and each course is one quarter long). Typically, six of these will be in Modern Greek language, and one will be a course offered in English on aspects of the culture of Modern Greece. Service responsibilities may include developing co-curricular programming relating to the modern Greek and Hellenic Studies program, supporting programming and events in the Center for Hellenic Studies, and serving as liaison with Study Abroad Office. All Instructional Professors are expected to engage in regular professional development.


Qualifications

Required qualifications

  • Native or near-native proficiency (ACTFL Advanced High or equivalent) in modern Greek
  • A Master’s degree or PhD in Modern Greek studies, or a related field, by the start date of the position
  • Prior experience teaching Modern Greek language

 

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience as an instructor of Modern Greek at the university level
  • Specialized training in second-language acquisition
  • Experience developing and/or organizing co-curricular activities
  • Ability to teach complementary subjects
