Position Summary

The University of Southern Indiana is accepting applications for Instructional Designer.

Under the direction of the Director of Online Learning, the Instructional Designer will work collaboratively with the Online Learning staff and other university professionals to support faculty and students’ online teaching and learning needs. Responsibilities include but not limited to providing online course development consultation, developing, and facilitating professional development workshops, conducting emerging technology research, developing instructional support resources, and managing course reviews.

Duties/Responsibilities 

  • Work collaboratively with faculty members and academic departments across USI to conceptualize, plan, design, develop, implement, and review online courses.
  • Apply a deep knowledge of pedagogical strategies and instructional design principles in order to improve teaching and learning in course designs.
  • Provide online teaching consultation by understanding faculty’s teaching style, the course learning objectives, required instructional components while co-developing a suitable course delivery strategy and co-identifying relevant learning technologies that would embrace the design of the curriculum for online delivery.
  • Provide professional expertise in the areas of emerging and innovative online learning tools and methodologies.
  • Assist with coordination and submission of course reviews internally and to Quality Matters.
  • Produce and develop online teaching resources, instructional materials, eLearning modules, and professional development workshops.
  • Facilitate online and in person professional development seminars and workshops that demonstrate effective uses of instructional technologies used for online teaching and learning.
  • Provide guidance to student staff as needed.
  • Assist with departmental event planning, scheduling, and delivery as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge and Skills

  • Bachelor's degree required in instructional design, educational technology, education, or related field.
  • Six months related experience.
  • Demonstrated experience of working in a team environment developing instructional learning materials and user support services.
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of instructional design methods and practices, quality online course development and delivery, the use of emerging learning technologies in education, data analysis/metrics reporting, and outcome-based assessment.
  • Familiarity with online curriculum components, online course development process, and online course delivery strategies.
  • Excellent written and oral communication, and consultation skills.
  • Familiarity with the use of Learning Management Systems from an instructor’s perspective, such as Blackboard Learn, Canvas, Desire to Learn, etc.
  • Ability to maintain high levels of creativity and quality.
  • Familiarity with web conferencing tools, such as Adobe Connect, Blackboard Collaborate, Zoom, and Teams.
  • Familiarity with the Quality Matters rubric.
  • Ability to work independently.

Preferred Knowledge and Skills

  • Master's degree.
  • Familiarity with peer review process.
