Job Title:
Instructional Design Specialist

Department:
ODEE | Distance Education

The goal of this position is to contribute to creating learning opportunities consistent with the University’s strategic plan for online education and a digital-first culture. This is an exciting opportunity to be at the forefront of shaping distance-education programs for one of the largest and best-ranked land-grant universities. This role will help change how Ohio State delivers education and will impact a world of learners. The position will primarily work with Ohio State faculty members to create and maintain high-quality, accessible, inclusive online courses based on evidence-based principles of effective college teaching and online pedagogy. This individual will employ expertise in one-on-one coaching consultation techniques, course design principles, and project management approaches to co-facilitate a collaborative course design and development process with support and supervision from senior instructional designers and will contribute to continual peer feedback and workshopping of ideas with other instructional designers. Instructional designers will research technologies and pedagogical approaches relevant to the goals of their individual projects and will share these insights with peers. In addition to partnerships with other instructional designers, this individual will need to build and maintain strong relationships with other  internal  stakeholders and with external partners as part of the deeply collaborative nature of Ohio State Online’s (OSO) work as a central support unit. The person in this role will be expected to use technology tools to plan and prototype, to develop effective learning activities, to help faculty author content, and to help build courses in the learning management system (Carmen/Canvas).

In addition, this role will require participation in the development and facilitation of presentations and group consultations, including opportunities to design and facilitate workshops, based on training and subject-matter expertise; sharing of work-related solutions, processes, and outcomes publicly through social media platforms, interest groups, and local, regional, and national committees and conferences; researching technologies and pedagogical approaches that support technology-enhanced learning; and engagement in professional development opportunities in college teaching and learning technology. This role will also engage with and support faculty and OSO colleagues creating technology-supported courses through other OSO initiatives.

The successful candidate will be a self-motivated worker who works effectively independently and as part of a team, leads and manages projects, takes a leadership role in team settings, is able to convey complex technical information through summarizing and simplification techniques in simple, clear language appropriate to the audience, and gathers consensus. Future colleagues who can provide examples of demonstrating flexibility and agility in achieving goals and building a positive, encouraging, and continuous improvement workplace culture are especially sought after.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Minimum 2 years of professional experience in a higher education institution in a role that primarily involves course design consultation with instructors, curriculum development, or faculty development.
  • Successful experience facilitating long-term consultations, through backward course design and consultation skills, to design online on hybrid courses with a range of instructors of different disciplines and experience levels.
  • Mastery of the core concepts of learning theory, evidence-based college teaching, authentic or transparent assessment approaches, and online pedagogy.
  • Experience setting up online courses and course activities in a learning management system (e.g., Carmen/Canvas) utilizing graphic design, usability, and accessibility principles.
  • Experience with formal academic assessment of student learning at a course level, including consulting with instructors to develop a course assessment plan based on data from multiple tools, both from student assignments as well as indirect measures of learning, to understand whether students are meeting the goals of a particular course.
  • Experience guiding instructors to incorporate evidence-based instructional practices that create a more inclusive learning environment. Familiar with course design and pedagogies that support a diverse student body, including but not limited to considerations of race and ethnicity, gender, disability, and the needs of international students.
  • Experience employing project-management methodologies in a collaborative setting, including effective communication and collaboration with instructors, peers, and external partners.

Desired Education and Experience:

  • Master's degree
  • 2-4 years preferred experience.
  • Experience and facility with the scholarship of teaching and learning as it pertains to online/hybrid instruction; including ability to review scholarly literature, synthesize, and translate expertise to diverse audiences.
  • Experience with social science research.
  • Experience designing and facilitating workshops and other professional learning programming.
