Primary Purpose
The Instructional Assistant – Vet Technician is responsible for working under the direction of and providing support to the Veterinary Technician Faculty by preparing labs, organizing supplies and equipment, monitoring the health of the lab animals, providing lab animal care and observing student performance and testing. At times, minimal supervision is provided; an Instructional Assistant must be able to work independently and accurately prioritize tasks.
Essenatial Duties and Responsibilities
  • Prepare laboratory environments for instruction by assembling necessary resources.
  • Assist faculty with demonstrations, observation, and evaluation of student essential skills performance.
  • Maintain records of activities undertaken in the laboratory which may include typing forms, inputting data or otherwise retaining information regarding students and their progress in meeting instructional goals.
  • Reinforce knowledge and skills introduced by the course faculty.
  • Handle animals for lab use.
  • Monitor the health and wellbeing of the mice, rats and rabbits on the weekends.
  • Clean, maintain and feed the mice rats and rabbits.
  • Clean and maintain instructional lab equipment.
  • Cleanup of laboratory sessions.
  • Support department faculty with copying class materials, stapling, and hole-punching; sort papers and/or supplies.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of good customer service skills.
  • Knowledge of Math sufficient to perform duties.
  • Experience with veterinary equipment and ordering of equipment and supplies.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, self-motivational, and oral and written communication skills.
  • Possess sensory and physical requirements to perform the essential functions of a veterinary technician.
  • Ability to work independently and to use good judgment with respect to priorities and deadlines.
  • Ability to communicate information effectively regarding College policies and procedures to students.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, and faculty from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to manage conflicts within and/or between groups and to work in a team environment.

  • Ability to use software programs and database systems which include Microsoft Office Suite, email, website editing, basic desktop publishing, and modern office equipment.
  • Ergonomic Requirements
    Regular office hours are established between 8 am – 5 pm during the workweek. A flexible work schedule, including nights and weekends, may be necessary due to the nature of the responsibilities. Small mammals are housed in the Vet Tech Lab in Redmond. Weekend care hours will be mandatory. The Instructional Assistant will need to provide their own transportation to and from the labs.

    Minimum Requirements
  • Associates degree from a AVMA Accredited Veterinary Technology Program.
  • Thorough knowledge in the field of Veterinary Medicine, Veterinary Technology and/or Veterinary Technician Training.
  • Minimum of two (2) years working with the handling and management of animals. Species worked with Include: dogs, cats, mice, rats, rabbits, horses, and cows.
  • Hold a current license as a Veterinary Technician by the Oregon Veterinary Medical Examining Board.

    Preferred Qualifications
    • Continuing education or courses in a related field.
    • Prior work experience of approximately 5 years, where veterinary technician skills have been applied and practiced.
    • Experience in teaching, coaching, or assisting in a laboratory setting.
    • CPR/First Aid Certificate.
