Instructional Aid Specialist


Department:
FAES | School of Environment and Natural Resources

Position will support course instruction for the School of Environment and Natural Resources. Duties include:


Grading and Mentoring :

  • Take the lead on grading homework, lab assignments, and exams using answer keys and rubrics provided by the instructor.
  • Mentor the Student Instructional Assistants (SIAs) assisting with the course.


Quiz Development:

  • Take the lead on developing weekly quizzes in consultation with the instructor.


Course Management:

  • Oversee the regular functioning of the Gradebook and other assignments and materials on Carmen, the university's online learning management system.


Content Contribution:

  • Work with the instructor to contribute to course content, including lectures, computer labs, quizzes, assignments, and activities.
  • Develop examples to be used in class, practice and homework problems, and lab activities.
  • Coordinate any special activities like exam review sessions and guest speakers.


Instructional Support:

  • Provide instructional support for labs, including assisting with student questions in the computer lab and providing assistance demonstrating software programs such as Excel, RStudio, QGIS, ArcMap, ArcPRO, eCognition, and SoloForest.
  • Test the labs each week to troubleshoot and modify rubrics as needed.


Office Hours and Grading:

  • Hold weekly office hours in person and/or online to answer student questions about course material.
  • Conduct grading during office hours when necessary.


Course Management Assistance:

  • Assist the instructor with overall course management, including monitoring the late policy for assignments.
  • Monitor the success of each student and alert the instructor to those who are falling behind or struggling academically.


Guest Lecturing (Rarely):

  • Guest lecture in class and/or computer lab as needed.

Minimum Required Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in a related field or equivalent experience and 2 years of experience in statistics and GIS systems and analysis. Master's degree in a related field is desired. Ideal candidates would have strong proficiency in statistics and GIS systems and analysis; excellent organizational and time management skills; effective communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students; and proficiency in relevant software programs such as Excel, RStudio, QGIS, ArcMap, ArcPRO, eCognition, and SoloForest.
