Job Summary:

This position will be in the Section of Hematology, Oncology, Bone Marrow Transplantation/Cell Therapy working clinically in the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders (CCBD) at Children’s Hospital Colorado (CHCO). This full-time faculty position will focus primarily on inpatient care of infants, children, adolescents, and young adults with blood and cancer disorders. You will integrate within the multi-disciplinary including other advanced practice providers in delivering outstanding inpatient care for pediatric hematology and oncology patients. You will be a member of a team that integrates clinical care, education, and research, with an expectation of contributing to clinical research.

This position will include rotational coverage assignments including weekdays and weekends along with rotational/shared holiday coverage support for patients in the CCBD according to the University of Colorado policies and calendars.

Key Responsibilities:

The duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide independent care of pediatric hematology-oncology patients in the inpatient hospital service, in partnership with other members of the multi-disciplinary inpatient team.
  • Write medication and chemotherapy orders in collaboration with physicians and advanced practice providers.
  • Provide timely documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR) of progress notes, transfer documentation, and discharge summaries.
  • Interpret diagnostic and monitoring tests.
  • Provide coordination of care between the inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Participate in the treatment of patients on clinical research protocols and liaise with members of the clinical research team to ensure appropriate study conduct for relevant patients.
  • Coordinate multi-disciplinary care with other members of the CCBD and other specialties and services.
  • Assist other CCBD providers in communications with outside referring and primary care providers.
  • Coordinate and assist with education of new patients and families.
  • Participate in Quality/Safety, and Process Improvement Initiatives.
  • Provide educational support to nursing and support staff.
  • Perform procedures independently, after an appropriate period of training if needed:
    • Lumbar punctures with or without intrathecal chemotherapy administration.
    • Bone marrow aspirations/biopsies.
  • This position will have weekend and holiday coverage responsibilities 

Work Location:

Onsite – this role is expected to work onsite and is located in Aurora, Colorado.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:  

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.  

This is an open rank position and could be categorized as Instructor or Senior Instructor based on experience and qualifications as indicated below:

Instructor:

  • Master's degree: Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or Master of Physician Assistant Studies (MPAS) from an accredited college or university.
  • Nurse Practitioner (Pediatrics or Family Medicine) or Physician Assistant degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Eligible for licensure to practice within the State of Colorado.
  • Eligible for Prescriptive Authority; if not currently certified, completing this process will be required within the first year of employment.
  • Acute Care certification for Nurse Practitioners.
  • Current certification through the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) for Physician Assistants.
  • Full credentialing at Children’s Hospital Colorado is required prior to the first date of employment. Failure to complete credentialing may delay the start of this position.

Senior Instructor:

  • Minimum five years of full-time experience at an academic medical center.
  • Master's degree: Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or Master of Physician Assistant Studies (MPAS) from an accredited college or university.
  • Nurse Practitioner (Pediatrics or Family Medicine) or Physician Assistant degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Eligible for licensure to practice within the State of Colorado.
  • Eligible for Prescriptive Authority; if not currently certified, completing this process will be required within the first year of employment.
  • Acute Care certification for Nurse Practitioners.
  • Current certification through the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) for Physician Assistants.
  • Full credentialing at Children’s Hospital Colorado is required prior to the first date of employment. Failure to complete credentialing may delay the start of this position.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong preference for prior experience in caring for pediatric hematology-oncology patients in an academic medical center environment.
  • Familiarity with or fluency in medical Spanish.
  • Experience with clinical trials and clinical research, including CITI training.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to effectively communicate professionally, clearly, and effectively with staff and faculty within and outside the Section, Department, and/or hospital.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with patients, families, and colleagues.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong advocacy skills.
  • Knowledge of best practices in patient safety and quality care.
  • Ability to write orders, including diagnostic tests, medications, care instructions, and adding to patients’ electronic medical records.
  • Ability to perform selected procedures including but not limited to lumbar punctures with or without intrathecal chemotherapy and bone marrow aspirates and biopsies.

Condition of Employment:

  • Must successfully pass a drug test through Children’s Hospital Colorado
  • Must be willing and able to pass a national criminal background check.

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range ) for this position has been established as HIRING RANGE:

Instructor: $110,000 to $120,000 

Sr. Instructor: $122,000 to $140,000

The above salary range (or hiring range ) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position is not eligible for overtime compensation unless it is non-exempt.
