Position Summary
The VIMS Center for Coastal Resources Management (CCRM) has an exciting opportunity for an Infrastructure Architect to serve as an integral member of their team with the goal of helping to maintain the large computer network required for running software essential to the Center’s objectives, data storage for the Center’s large archive, and services provided to the scientific and management community nationwide.
The Center has a commitment to continue to advance as technology advances in these areas with the expectation that these services are maintained to the highest level of security reasonable to ensure the protection of all of the Center’s electronic information and pathways. The ability to advance with technology and software developments in the field of GIS, database development, and systems administration is essential.
The Infrastructure Architect, under the supervision of the Center Assistant Director, provides technical direction and is responsible for the design, implementation, maintenance, management, operations, optimization, administration, and troubleshooting of various web servers, databases, and computer systems within the Center. This role involves managing websites, and server infrastructure, and providing technical support for software and hardware as well as new systems integration evaluation and best practice guidance for future implementation.

Conditions of Employment
  • This position is subject to additional hours beyond the typical work day/week, including evenings and weekends in order to meet the business needs.
  • This is a restricted position, subject to the continued availability of funding. 
  • This position requires administrative access to VIMS’s information systems and/or sensitive data. The incumbent is expected to be aware of and adhere to, the Information security policies of VIMS and William & Mary as well as all applicable federal, state, and local laws, follow information security best practices applicable to their job area, and pursue information security training and awareness opportunities when possible.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and or experience.
  • Experience with Windows Server administration and other hosted servers.
  • Working knowledge (typically 2 or more years of experience,) with system administration.
  • Strong knowledge of Linux, Apache, MySQL, and (LAMP) stack.
  • Familiarity with ArcGIS Server and integrated database management.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python and PHP.
  • Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Science / Technology, Computer Science, or a technical field such as Engineering.
  • Experience working with both Windows and UNIX servers along with Internet Information Services.
  • Experience with network-based servers and related services, including cloud and virtual platforms.
  • Appropriate certification in network services-related technologies.
  • Demonstrated skills in automating IT processes using programming skills in appropriate languages.
  • Proven skills and demonstrated ability in deploying server-based resources in support of network services, including cloud and virtual platforms.
