Job Summary
The College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking applicants for the IT Systems Engineer position. This position will be charged with setting up and maintaining servers in accordance with all University and College IT policies, plans, and guidelines. This position will need strong working knowledge of server operating systems including Linux (primary) and Windows (secondary). Servers will be hosted in a virtual environment connected to a storage area network. Many of the servers will be supporting operations in our two hospitals so uptime and security are of upmost importance. There is an expectation of night and weekend work as needed to perform maintenance tasks or troubleshoot system outages. The position will be responsible for setting up and supporting the physical server hardware as needed. This position will assist in the management of an extensive Horizon VDI environment that is essential to the Teaching Hospitals.

Essential Functions
  • Provides technical design, implementation, maintenance, system administration and support of hardware, software, network and/or instructional technology.
  • Provides problem identification and resolution, training and preparation/maintenance of documentation.
  • Participates in projects and cross-functional activities related to information technology initiatives or processes.
  • May provide on-call support for designated systems or services.
  • Thorough knowledge of Linux system administration, virtualization, storage area networks, and network protocols.
  • Ability to document clearly; effective written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • The ability to interact professionally with a diverse group of users and support staff.
  • Proven ability to initiate, track, and manage successfully multiple detail-oriented projects simultaneously.

Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s Degree and 3 years of relevant IT experience OR
  • Associates Degree and 7 years of relevant IT experience OR
  • High School Diploma / GED general education and 11 years relevant IT experience

Relevant IT experience must be in the administration of distributed computer systems, preferably in a University setting.

Minimum Skills, License, and Certifications


Minimum Skills and Abilities
  • Advanced understanding of server infrastructure and operating systems.
  • Ability to test and troubleshoot vulnerabilities in software and hardware.
  • Ability to implement software and upgrade firmware.
  • Ability to recognize, analyze, and solve a variety of problems.
  • Ability to effectively communicate technical concepts to a non-technical audience.

Desired Qualifications
  • Desired qualifications include a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in computer science, MIS, or related field; experience with RHEL, Compellent SANs, VMWare, Palo Alto Firewalls, PACS servers, EHRs, LIMS, Oracle, and HL7.
  • Experience with Horizon VDI a plus.
