Job Summary

 

Department Purpose

The UC Davis DataLab facilitates data-enabled research and training in scientific, engineering, social, and humanities disciplines, assisting researchers across the entire data pipeline from acquisition to management, to analysis. DataLab offers direct consultation with faculty, researchers, and students, and performs a variety of data design, gathering, cleaning, analysis, and research services. We also offer workshops and training in a wide range of digital methods and serve as an important first point of contact for students and researchers with data questions and needs. DataLab also serves as one of several centers in the library that pursues independent research in digital and data-driven methods and information management.

Job Summary

Under the direction of DataLab’s Executive Director, the Associate Director for Strategic Initiatives is responsible for establishing and managing relationships between DataLab and campus external entities, such as commercial entities, National Laboratories, and government and funding agencies, including developing, establishing, and maintaining collaborative initiatives, such as internship programs and joint research efforts, and funding opportunities, such as grants, fellowships, and financial gifts. The incumbent will also identify opportunities for DataLab community events such as Hackathons and Challenges that engage with entities external to campus and also be responsible for planning and hosting these events with the support of the DataLab Directorate and Staff. The incumbent will also participate in DataLab strategic planning to ensure that the DataLab’s training and community development efforts are well aligned with the needs of industry and will best serve the professional development of our patrons.

RECRUITMENT PERIOD ONE MONTH: Applicants will be screened after two weeks; and then on a weekly basis. The position can be filled prior to the removal date.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Standing or sitting at a computer workstation for extended periods of time, operating and occasionally moving computer and peripheral equipment; communicate in person, telephone and e-mail, and other online services; understanding and interacting with program output and a variety of computer displays. Out-of-state and/or international travel for training, conferences, and project work. Overnight stays may be required.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Maintain a work schedule during core business hours (working hours will vary from 8:00 am – 6:00 pm, Monday through Friday) with occasional irregular shifts, weekends, holidays and evenings on short notice to meet operational needs, international conference calls, and occasional deadlines or emergency needs as necessitated by client/partner needs and project launches, major events, funding deadlines and IT systems availability. Work in an open office environment with multiple interruptions. Travel to off-campus locations including out-of-state and/or international travel to meet with clients/partners as needed. Overnight stays may be required. This is a critical position that includes handling of potentially sensitive data types and is subject to a background check. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of background investigation including criminal history and identity check.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education/Experience:           

  • Master’s degree in Business Administration or similar graduate degree in business management and development and two years of experience working in a business management and development and/or business-to-business relationship management capacity in the technology sector OR Bachelor’s degree in Business or business related field of study and six years of experience working in a business management and development and/or business-to-business relationship management capacity in the technology sector;
  • Demonstrated program and project planning and management expertise;

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA) :

  • Advanced presentation and persuasive skills;
  • Excellent leadership and teamwork skills;
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills sufficient to present clear, unambiguous project proposals and reports, as well as technical specifications and documentation, to both expert and general public audiences;
  • Attention to detail and organization skills for honing in on each necessary task; Advanced decision-making and problem-solving skills;
  • Interpersonal skills for building meaningful relationships with clients/partners; Ability to work independently, and to collaborate successfully as a team leader or team member.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Additional Preferred License/Certification:

  • Relevant certifications, such as the Certified Business Development Professional or Certified Business Development Expert credentials.

Preferred Education/Experience:           

  • Education or professional background in Data Science or related statistical or computational field;

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA) :

  • Extensive knowledge of productivity tools and software;
  • Knowledge of Data Science methods;
