Position Focus:

The Research Manager for Inclusion Economics at Yale University (YIE) will support research and grant administration for YIE engagements and studies focused on gender, climate and governance.  This position offers the qualified candidate an opportunity to work closely with top tier research faculty in a dynamic team to support cutting-edge development economics research focused on questions of equitable distribution of power and opportunity working.  The candidate will work closely with research and programmatic staff at Yale and in network organizations, Inclusion Economics India Centre at IFMR (formerly EPoD India at IFMR) and Inclusion Economics Nepal at Governance Lab, to ensure research is high quality and academically rigorous, while meeting donor requirements and advancing policy improvements relevant to economic and social inclusion.  Regular travel to India and/or Nepal will be required.

Day-to-day responsibilities include guiding and monitoring primary data collection, managing grant proposals and deliverables, supporting research staff requests, ensuring data security and ethics requirements are met, coordinating with research partners and implementing appropriate systems for research and staff management.  Specifically, the Research Manager will focus on:

Drive forward research study and initiative objectives to achieve goals in mutually agreed upon timelines, soliciting and synthesizing inputs from a range of team members, collaborators and partners, as needed.  Ensure that processes and policies across US-based and international teams are in place and being followed to ensure high-quality research administration, including on budgeting and spending, field and data collection protocols, human subjects protection/research ethics, data security, and operations.  Work with country-based teams to design, establish, test, and refine appropriate data quality tracking and monitoring systems for studies.  Manage recruitment, including recommendations for hiring and onboarding and offboarding processes for project pre-doctoral research fellows and related portfolio contributors.  Problem solve with team members, external vendors and other collaborators to ensure project goals are met.

Assess overall study and portfolio financials, highlighting potential shortfalls and recommending strategies to fill funding gaps.  Assess country-based budgets and planning, recommending adjustments and ensuring all plans follow best practices outlined for Inclusion Economics work.  Lead or support the development of grant proposals and budgets, including coordination of compiling research and administrative inputs to ensure a coherent proposal, along with providing concrete guidance to affiliated country teams. Manage completion and submission of grant deliverables by drafting, revising and submitting required materials to donors, coordinating inputs from others and ensuring deadlines are met.

Draft, review/revise and/or contribute content for communication materials (website, op-eds, blog posts, etc), and grant proposals and reports.  Manage organization and delivery of events (e.g., symposiums, conferences) to ensure high quality implementation and effective stakeholder engagement. 

Work with staff in country offices to ensure all compliance-related issues are identified and addressed in a proactive, efficient manner.


Essential Duties

1. Develops and implements research operations to carry out specific long term field studies. 2. Hires, trains and supervises field staff providing direction in research protocol, subject recruitment, enrollment and obtaining consent from identified subjects. 3. Develops complex data management systems to incorporate significant data acquired during all phases of the study; reviews progress and assures accuracy and compliance of data being acquired and stored. Generates regular and ad hoc reports for analysis of study integrity. 4. Provides continuous feedback on study progress, and contributes to complex development of annual reports, statistical reporting and protocol design. 5. May perform other related duties as assigned.


Required Education and Experience

Master’s degree in relevant field and two years related experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.


Required Skill/Ability 1:

Strong understanding of empirical methods, including econometrics and economics, as demonstrated by coursework or other similar channels.  Knowledge of research methods, statistics, and data analysis, particularly in Stata. Understanding of randomized controlled trials.


Required Skill/Ability 2:

Strong interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal) and the proven ability to interact effectively with faculty, staff, students, and research partners including those in developing countries.


Required Skill/Ability 3:

Extremely organized and self-directed, with attention to detail and the ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously.  Flexible, self-motivated individual with a team player attitude.  Demonstrated ability to train and lead a high performing research team.


Required Skill/Ability 4:

Skills in grant proposal preparation, grant management, project reporting, and communications, including an ability to integrate research and policy into coherent and effective written materials.  Demonstrated ability to manage project budgets. 


Required Skill/Ability 5:

Demonstrated positive attitude and commitment to working as a member of a center-wide team.  The ideal candidate should have the ability to understand, communicate, and effectively interact with people across cultures. Being open to learning about different dimensions of diversity and exhibiting positive attitudes towards cultural differences.


Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

At least 6 years of proven experience conducting advanced statistical/econometric analysis and managing research projects and staff; or master’s level education in economics, public policy or related fields and related experience. 


Physical Requirements

Strong interest and proven experience in international development work including living and conducting field research in a developing country and willingness to travel.
