Position Information
The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) seeks an innovative and energetic Inaugural Dean for the School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM). This is a full-time, twelve-month position. Salary is commensurate with education, experience, and qualifications.
Reporting to the Provost, and Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Dean will oversee all
elements of the SVM’s academic enterprise. The Dean will be responsible for further development of the capacity of the school and advancing all the associated programs in reputation, distinctiveness, and influence. The dean will expand the physical, fiscal and human capital of the school while serving as a critical member of the senior academic leadership at the university.
The SVM will offer a doctor of veterinary medicine (DVM) degree and is expected to develop a B.S. degree in Veterinary Technology and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences. The Dean of SVM is also expected to be actively engaged in research and extension commensurate with UMES as an 1890 land-grant university.
Responsibilities
The dean will provide overall vision and leadership for the school. The major responsibilities will
include:

  • Providing administrative leadership, management and planning to enable the school to fulfill its responsibilities and goals while working with a team of department chairs and associate/assistant deans;
  • Navigating the accreditation processes with the AVMA-COE and ensuring full compliance with all accreditation and regulatory requirements;
  • Assessing the external landscape for strategic opportunities that enhance the SVM program and student outcomes;
  • Reviewing and enhancing the curriculum;
  • Recruitment and retention of students, and provision of high levels of support to ensure success and timely graduation;
  • Recruiting, supervision, mentoring, and performance evaluation of faculty and staff;
  • Representation of the school within the University and with external stakeholders;
  • Stewardship of the school’s physical, fiscal and human resources including public, private, and competitive grants and contracts;
  • Enhancing relationships with other academic programs at UMES while enriching the intellectual environment for faculty, staff, and students;
  • Enhancing collaboration with partners from other departments across the university and externally to secure grants and contracts, which build capacity and enhance mission delivery;
  • Representing the school/UMES on internal and external committees, task forces, advisory boards, and to agencies and professional organizations as appropriate.

Required Qualifications
  • Candidates must possess a DVM degree.Note: Individuals with degrees outside of the US may be subject to verification. Verification of degree is the responsibility of the candidate.
  • Over 10 years of excellent academic and administrative leadership experience including fiscal and physical and human capital management;
  • A record of achievement that would allow the applicant to be appointed as a tenured professor in the school.
  • Demonstrated success in overseeing a complex academic organization, including management of academic, financial, operational, and administrative elements, preferably in a College/School of Veterinary Medicine;
  • Evidence of development of high-quality curriculum and academic programs, with focus on the student experience and student learning outcomes;
  • A record of attracting, developing, mentoring, motivating, and retaining high-quality faculty and staff and building a high-performing team;
  • Evidence of the development and implementation of a strategic plan that prioritizes and mobilizes institutional assets to enhance student outcomes;
  • Demonstrated experience as a collaborative leader, committed to the importance of disciplinary strength as well as inter- and multi-disciplinary efforts;
  • Commitment to promoting faculty development and strengthening the research efforts of a multidisciplinary department;
  • Strong leadership and communication skills including writing and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to function effectively as an independent administrator and as part of a senior administrative team.
  • Appreciation, support, and enhancement of diversity, equity, and inclusion and the demonstrated ability to relate effectively to a wide variety of people of diverse backgrounds, including an understanding and respect for cultural, ethnic, gender, and individual differences.

  • Advanced professional or academic degrees or advanced specialty board certification or comparable professional recognition.

  • Intellectual curiosity and enthusiasm, innovative spirit, bold and creative thinking, and a willingness to take calculated risks within limits of authority and with appropriate support.
  • Ability to successfully engage with different cultures and diverse groups; and an genuine, pleasant manner and ability to build relationships and gain support from faculty, staff, students, board members, and external audiences.
