DESCRIPTION

The Department of Medicine (DOM) is the largest department within the UCSD School of Medicine and is responsible for fulfilling the teaching, research, and clinical missions of the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine. The department employs approximately 500 salaried faculty, 168 academic appointees, 331 residents, fellow and postdocs and 479 staff personnel.

The IBD Clinical Research Coordinator Assistant will be assigned to coordinate multiple federally funded and industry-sponsored research studies involving human subjects that are being conducted in the UCSD Translational Inflammatory Bowel Disease Research Department. Assist with initiation, implementation and management of research studies. Ensure compliance with goals and objectives of research protocols and with state and federal regulatory guidelines.

Under supervision, duties will include but not limited to: interpreting research protocols; recruiting subjects; screening for eligibility including scheduling subjects' visits; coordinating clinical, laboratory and data collection activities; processing and submitting laboratory specimens; collecting and entering research data; maintaining accurate and complete clinical research files and patient medical charts. Update study and patient records in the University approved Clinical Trial Management System (VELOS) on a consistent basis. Provide direct assistance to the Project Manager in reviewing project milestones and verifying invoicing.

Assure compliance with state and federal regulatory guidelines. Oversee the quality of the medical and clinical research data. Provide direction and guidance to investigators. Assist PIs with proposals, progress reports and manuscripts. Work closely with federal and state regulatory officials. Other duties assigned as needed.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Theoretical knowledge and/or Bachelor's Degree in a social science or basic science such as Biology, Microbiology or a related field and/or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.

  • Knowledge of National Institute of Health (NIH), Good Clinical Practice (GCP), Human Resource Protection Program (HRPP), Laboratory Hazards and Safety Fundamentals, IATA Shipping of Blood Specimens, and Bloodborne Pathogens.

  • Experience with laboratory procedures and processing biological specimens

  • Experience interpreting medical charts, experience in abstracting data from medical records.

  • Experience working with UCSD Velos database

  • Knowledge of Gastroenterology medical terminology.

  • Knowledge of Inflammatory Bowel Disease research and implications.

  • Demonstrated experience with research protocol in order to screen patients for eligibility, initiate research plan, collect specimens, and orient participating physicians.

  • Proven ability to find creative and innovative solutions to adjusting needs of the center. Ability to be resourceful and to understand the overall nature of work/responsibilities to establish useful resources and University contacts.

  • Working knowledge of medical and scientific terminology. Strong experience completing clinical trials case report forms via hard copy and online.

  • Proven ability to problem solve and resolve conflict.

  • Excellent interpersonal, as well as written and verbal communication skills (using grammatically correct written English and accurate typing) to interact with a variety of personalities at the organization, exercising tact, mature judgment, diplomacy, and flexibility to promote positive working relationships and job effectiveness. Skill at negotiating with various personalities and developing internal and external network of contacts. Excellent phone etiquette skills.

  • Computer proficiency, including working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet software (Microsoft Office) and internet browser applications. Experience in conducting searches on the internet.

  • Bilingual in Spanish
