ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMARY:
Researchers in the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine will conduct a clinical research study to help determine if hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) can ease the symptoms of traumatic brain injury (TBI) in Florida's veteran, active duty, and reserve service members. The USF Health-based clinical trial for HBOT will be a five-year, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, the gold standard in academic research. The initial phase of the clinical trial is underway. Actions include convening a national advisory panel of experts and collaborating with the James A Haley Veteran's Hospital and other community leaders. The clinical trial is being led by Harry van Loveren, MD, professor and chair of the USF Health Department of Neurosurgery and Brain Repair.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Performs duties under indirect supervision of the Safety Director and is responsible for the safe and effective operation of the hyperbaric chambers and related support systems.  This individual is responsible for the day-to-day maintenance on the hyperbaric chambers and related support systems. Through their training they supervise each HBO treatment or ensures treatments are supervised only by qualified staff who are trained in hyperbaric medicine.  Individual will also provide all patient education and patient care in the HBO facility.  Maintains competencies, continuing education and certifications as appropriate. Ensures department compliance with NFPA 99, Hyperbaric Facilities, and with clinic safety policies and procedures.
General requirements per the National Fire Protection Association: Assume responsibility for the safe and effective operation and maintenance of the hyperbaric chambers and related systems as well as ancillary components. Make necessary recommendations to the Safety Director for departmental safety policies and incorporate new safety procedures as required.  Responsible to restrict or remove any potentially hazardous supply or equipment items from the chamber after addressing concerns with the Safety Director. Provide leadership and safety training to other hyperbaric facility personnel as directed.
Assist patient with preparation for treatment. Performs patient assessments including vital signs and reinforce education as it relates to hyperbaric therapy. Keep complete and accurate patient records pertaining to hyperbaric treatment. Perform regular hyperbaric chamber system maintenance as required. All duties will be under the direction of the Safety Director and Medical Director.
Ensures department compliance with Department of Health, and IBUM accreditation standards. Reviews all department safety incidents, collects information regarding equipment/patient safety, reports relevant incidents to the AHT/Safety Supervisor, and periodically provides in-service training on accident prevention. Works closely with the Technical, Medical, and Nursing Directors to develop and annually review/revise department policies and procedures and operational and maintenance documents.
Ensures that all facility bills are properly coded and submitted and that each treatment is tracked and reported to the Safety Director. Ensures that Physicians sign all required documents.
Participates in annual review of safety related Works closely with the Safety Director to coordinate and approve all hyperbaric chamber upgrades, modifications, and repairs to the hyperbaric systems, including interaction with hospital maintenance, and that all activities are done in accordance with appropriate safety standards.
Ensures that the testing of all modifications is performed before manned pressurization. Evaluates hyperbaric chamber equipment/supplies used in the chamber and ensures that they meet all safety requirements prior to admission in the chamber. Maintains a safe environment in the hyperbaric facility for patients and staff and uses only directed research treatment protocols. Informs personnel of any special work conditions such as infection control, hazard control, and confined spaces.

Establishes a procedure to assist the Safety Director and Medical Director in reviewing and documenting safety-related events and discusses appropriate events with others to facilitate learning. Participates in hyperbaric chamber safety drills which are tailored to improve staff response to emergency situations/events to identify trends and monitor improvement.
Performs other duties as assigned.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
MINIMUM:
HS diploma or GED. CPR and AED qualified and current along with the ability to be trained as a medical assistant. IBUM AHT or equivalent experience required.
PREFERRED:
IBUM AHT or Equivalent required.
CPR and AED qualified and current.
SPECIAL SKILLS/TRAINING:
CPR qualified
AED qualified
Meet qualifications for Medical Assistant training.
