Position Summary
The HVAC Technician II-Evening Shift is responsible for performing advanced (senior-level) work in the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) building maintenance and construction trade to ensure the safe and uninterrupted heating and air conditioning services of UIW facilities. HVAC Technician II-Evening Shift reports to the HVAC Supervisor.

This position is considered a “Responsible Employee” under Title IX federal regulations and “Mandatory Reporter” under Texas state law and the UIW Sexual Misconduct Policy. As a Mandatory Reporter, this position requires you as the employee to promptly report any incident that you witness or receive information about Title IX violations. These reporting responsibilities are set out in the UIW Sexual Misconduct Policy.

Description of Job Duties
  • Inspect, operate, maintain, repair and install air conditioning units, chillers, heat pumps, furnaces, ducts, and dampers, electronic and computerized controls.
  • Inspect and troubleshoot all equipment on a routine schedule. Document setting and findings.
  • Maintain all building air intake, exhaust and filter systems.
  • Clean/change filters, lubricate motors and equipment, repair and replace units as necessary.
  • Reclaim refrigerants.
  • Respond to calls for temperature control in buildings and/or HVAC problems.
  • Inspect and operate all HVAC equipment to check for efficiency, making adjustments to controls as necessary.
  • Respond to after-hour emergencies or repairs when necessary. Perform duties in a safe manner in accordance with established work procedures.
  • Maintain proper inventory or tools and parts to ensure availability.
  • Participate in on-call rotation.
  • Monitor and manipulate building management systems to ensure comfort optimization and meet energy conservation goals / requirements. Assist with CPS Demand Response adjustments.
  • Under the guidance of and in support of the HVAC Supervisor, assign, prioritize and lead small work groups to ensure all HVAC-related tasks are completed as required.
  • Develop long-range plans for HVAC maintenance and upgrades in collaboration with the HVAC Supervisor and other facility leadership.
  • Coordinate parts and material requirements. Communicate needs for equipment, parts and materials to designated supply room/warehouse personnel to ensure timely on-hand access in accordance with designated processes and timeframes.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications


Knowledge Skills and Abilities
  • Strong knowledge of Commercial HVAC & refrigeration equipment.
  • Strong knowledge of computer systems pertaining to HVAC operations.
  • Ability to problem-solve and show sound judgment.
  • Strong knowledge of proper and safe use of hand and power tools.
  • Strong knowledge of hazards and procedures for safety measures in area(s) of HVAC specialty, as well as general maintenance and shop safety.
  • Highly skilled in HVAC-related electrical and mechanical repair, service, and maintenance.
  • Skilled at reading /interpreting building prints, schematics, and working drawings.
  • Ability to use and perform basic shop math applications related to HVAC systems.
  • Strong knowledge of pneumatics, hydraulics and pressures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others and express ideas effectively and concisely.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with colleagues, supervisory staff at all levels, and UIW community to establish and maintain harmonious relations and work environment.
  • Ability to effectively organize, plan and coordinate resources to achieve results.
  • Ability to effectively manage and lead small teams in maintenance/repair jobs.

Required Education
8th grade education.
Required Work Experience
Five (5) years of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Seven (7) years of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning experience.
Required Certifications, Licenses or Registrations
  • Must have a valid driver license, driving record that is insurable by UIW insurance carrier, and be at least 21 years of age, as required to drive for UIW.
  • C.F.C. Universal Certification.
  • TDLR HVAC Technician Certification.
Work Hours
Monday through Friday 8 am to 5 pm, with extended hours as needed to meet departmental needs, to include weekends, and holidays.
Physical Demands
  • Near-vision acuity needed to read equipment diagrams and inspect parts.
  • Possess depth perception, field of vision and color vision to fit and install parts.
  • Must be able to lift, carry, push and pull a variety of tools, equipment and materials ranging up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to work in inclement weather and variable working environments-hot/damp/cold.
  • Exposure to noise and vibrations from operating machinery.
  • Must be able to reach overhead, as well as work in confined areas to access equipment.
  • Must be able to climb, balance, stoop, kneel and crouch to gain access to pipes, wiring and equipment.
  • Properly handle a variety of hand and power tools.
