About the Position:

Performs series of skilled tasks in HVAC by assisting more senior-level trades workers and performs related duties as required or assigned. Shift Monday - Friday, 2:00 pm - 10:30 pm.

Responsibilities:

Under limited supervision, the employee assists with installation, modification, maintenance, and repair work on University HVAC systems and equipment to include:

  • Locates causes of failure or malfunction by observation and testing of mechanical, electrical, pneumatic components, and application-specific computer programs;
  • Maintains cooling towers, hot water and chilled water piping and controls, direct expansion systems, fans and blowers, starters, pneumatic and electrical controls, condensate drains, domestic and commercial refrigeration, walk-in coolers and freezers, water fountains, and ice machines;
  • Installs new motors, pumps, compressors and other parts as necessary;
  • Cleans, repairs, replaces, and/or adjusts pneumatic, electric, and motor controls, and related safety devices;
  • Make initial settings and final adjustments of refrigeration and heating and air conditioning systems; modifies existing installations to obtain required results;
  • Repairs or replaces other functional components of HVAC equipment or systems as necessary;
  • Carries out designated preventive maintenance and seasonal start-up and shut-down procedures;
  • Analyzes HVAC systems and controls to determine problems and initiates repairs as directed by supervisor;
  • Drives a vehicle to and from locations and keeps vehicle supplied with tools and materials and keeps it maintained and in an orderly, clean condition;
  • Performs miscellaneous duties such as cleaning and painting the equipment and mechanical areas;
  • Picks up materials from suppliers when requested;
  • Inspects areas and reports problems to supervisor;
  • Maintains paperwork and electronic communications, including work orders, including recording time, orders and includes materials on work orders in an expedient manner;
  • Follows established university and departmental policies and procedures; follows established safety procedures and reports accidents and problems to supervisor promptly;
  • Performs assigned progressive on-the-job training tasks to develop skills in the HVAC trade; and
  • Performs other duties as assigned, including snow removal during inclement weather events.

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent;
  • Demonstrated progressive experience (generally 4+ years) in the HVAC trade;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the equipment, materials, methods, practices and tools used in the HVAC trade;
  • Knowledge of the common hazards and necessary safety precautions;
  • Knowledge of local, state, and national mechanical codes;
  • Ability to use necessary hand and power tools and testing equipment;
  • Ability to analyze HVAC systems and controls to determine problems and initiate repairs as directed by supervisor;
  • EPA-approved universal refrigerant recovery type I, II, & III CFC licenses; and
  • Valid driver's license: must currently possess an appropriate, active, valid motor vehicle operator's license that meets all of GMU's requirements for operating state vehicles and equipment under Mason's Vehicle Use Policy 1411 https://universitypolicy.gmu.edu/policies/vehicle-use/. The Office of Risk Management reserves the right to review the driver's licenses and Motor Vehicle Reports (MVRs) of all candidates selected with employment contingent upon a favorable review.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated progressive experience (generally 5+ years) in commercial HVAC.
