JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Penn State Facilities Engineering Institute is seeking an experienced HVAC Mechanical Engineer (Facilities Engineer - Intermediate Professional) to provide technical advisory services for HVAC systems and energy management for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania's historic sites and agencies.

The Penn State Facilities Engineering Institute (PSFEI) is a front-facing, non-academic unit that has had a rich tradition of providing facility engineering advisory services since our founding in 1947. PSFEI is part of the College of Engineering at Penn State University Park; however, we touch the lives of thousands of people in all 67 counties of Pennsylvania and across our nation through the facility engineering, education program, facility condition assessment, and energy management services that we provide. Through our success, we have grown to a workforce of over 40 engineers, specialists, programmers, and administrative staff who are located throughout the Commonwealth. Your Role at PSFEI
The HVAC Mechanical Engineer is part of a unique team that is honored to have a role in preserving the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania's natural and cultural heritage by partnering with the dedicated staff of the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC). Since 1997, PSFEI has assisted PHMC personnel with preserving Pennsylvania's history, facilities, and artifacts by providing professional advisory services on the management of building systems and environmental conditions. You will be joining a team who is passionate about being a trusted and valued resource to PHMC and who trusts and values those with whom we are privileged to work.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Assisting with project design review and management.

  • Overseeing mechanical and building automation systems and troubleshooting system issues.

  • Establishing quality measures for HVAC preventative maintenance performance.

  • Developing and maintaining mechanical system design, operation, and maintenance standards.

  • Authoring technical reports that are clear, concise, and actionable.

This position provides a blend of office and fieldwork that primarily requires day travel, but includes an occasional overnight stay. 

Who Should Apply

This is the job for you if you have experience designing and maintaining mechanical (HVAC) equipment/systems and enjoy interacting with a variety of audiences whose goal is to ensure that systems are properly designed, installed, and maintained. This position is well suited to candidates who have the ability to evaluate mechanical systems and provide guidance on repair and replacement strategies, as well as those who can review and comment on professional design proposals to ensure the finished product meets required performance standards.

Education and Experience Requirements

This position typically requires a bachelor’s degree in an engineering or science discipline and at least 2 years of related experience. A professional engineering license and additional years of related experience are strongly preferred; experience with geothermal systems technology and BACnet controls is a plus.

Other Requirements Worth Noting

This position is based at our PSFEI office in State College, Pennsylvania; however, a flexible work arrangement, including 100 percent remote work, may be considered when aligned with the ability to meet the needs and essential duties of the position. 

This position requires that you operate a motor vehicle as a part of your job duties. A valid driver’s license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks.

Security clearances may be required for access to client sites.

This is a limited-term appointment, funded for three years from the date of hire, with an excellent possibility of renewal.

The pay range for this position, including all possible grades is:

$68,200.00 - $102,300.00
