Position Summary/Description:


This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.
The (HR) Human Resources Office in Kenan Labs is the first point of contact for human resources matters in the Department of Chemistry. The purpose of the Admin Support Specialist in the Department of Chemistry is to provide comprehensive professional service and support to faculty, staff, students and affiliates. This includes but is not limited to human resource actions related to Graduate students, temporary and unpaid affiliates, Time Information Management (TIM) system administration and assistance with immigrant/non-immigrant application and petition processing with the University's International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS). The position is responsible for applying, communicating and utilizing best practices in human resources, including familiarity with University, State and federal policies related to human resources.
Specific responsibilities include:
- Independently handle employment and onboarding for Graduate student (260), temporary staff (23) and unpaid affiliate (45) employees per academic year.
- Oversees Graduate Student Health Insurance program.
- As TIM Administrator, responsible for leave, time and attendance for Department of Chemistry employees, including serving as a subject matter expert and training and consulting with managers and employees. Counsel and track employees on an approved leave status (i.e., FMLA, Workers Comp).
- Responsible for ISSS actions, including H1B, J1, OP-1, and reverifications. 
- Independently handle payroll, payroll issues and miscellaneous human resources actions as needed. 
- Contribute to the development, planning and implementation of new initiatives for continuous improvement.
- Supervise 2 work study students and serve as backup for many functions and duties of the 2-person team. 
The Admin Support Specialist will report to the HR Lead in Chemistry. This position requires a high level of technical knowledge and independent decision making in understanding and interpreting policies. The position must be able to adapt communications to address changing situations and client needs. Responsible for developing and maintaining collaborative work relationships and proactively responding to customer needs.

Education and Experience:


High school diploma or equivalency and one year of related office experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
