Position Summary
The Human Resources Consultant, reporting to the Senior Human Resources Consultant will support the Raymond A. Mason School of Business’s strategic goals by providing individualized concierge-style HR services to key stakeholders. Position will provide faculty, staff, and leadership guidance concerning human resource policies and procedures for W&M. The Raymond A. Mason School of Business HR Consultant provides services to the School, ensuring optimum efficiency and effectiveness in the delivery of human resources services while adhering to and achieving the University’s goals and objectives.
The Human Resources HR Consultant is charged with coordinating the full spectrum of HR Services (e.g. Employment, Recruitment, Compensation, Benefits) and supporting documentation, and ensures they are providing and delivering world-class customer service. This position’s primary responsibilities are to manage the human resource needs of the School of Business. The position requires an extremely high level of confidentiality regarding human resources activities. It will maintain departmental human resources records and manages all aspects of the hiring and clearance process for all department positions, coordinating with University Human Resources, Budget and Equal Opportunity offices.
Core Responsibilities:
  • Serves as the on-site HR professional responsible for ensuring consistent adoption of HR processes and procedures to support a high-performing HR culture and infrastructure with a customer service mindset.
  • Performs analysis of requested position and compensation actions within assigned areas to determine appropriate classification and compensation levels and submits comprehensive analysis to central HR with sound recommendations consistent with State and University policy using classification factors, internal and external comparisons, and salary survey data.
  • Works with hiring managers and unit leadership to develop strategic recruitment plans.
  • Requests and reviews position descriptions to ensure descriptions are accurate and consistent with the classification for the position.
  • Consults with and provides guidance to hiring managers to ensure job descriptions and qualifications are appropriate and consistent with responsibilities for the positions.
  • Recommends classification and compensation reviews for position descriptions with appropriate changes prior to recruiting the position.
  • Responsible for the timely hiring and payment of all Raymond A. Mason School of Business employees, including faculty, staff, and students.
  • Assists with facilitating, influencing and negotiating collaborations between various departments and individuals.
  • Effectively manages multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

This position may also require additional hours beyond the typical work week, including occasional overnight and weekend work as needed to meet the business needs.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree and /or equivalent combination of education and experience,
  • Knowledge of HR principles and practices including applicable federal and state laws and regulations governing compensation, benefits, and employment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to foster a collaborative environment, and build strong team relations while driving strong internal and external customer relations.
  • Excellent organization and planning skills with the ability to manage multiple relationships and priorities concurrently with fluidity.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to write comprehensive analytical reports, speak before diverse audiences, and facilitate training.
  • Proficiency with a variety of software applications including MS Office, HRIS systems, and ATS systems, with the ability to learn new applications efficiently and effectively.
  • Experience with recruitment and onboarding practices.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Human Resource Management, Organizational Development, Business Administration, Psychology or related degree.
  • HR Certifications (PHR, SPHR, SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP or IPMA-HR).
  • Experience evaluating and classifying positions to determine appropriate classification and compensation levels.
  • Knowledge of payroll processing, I-9 processing, and expense reporting.
  • Knowledge of performance management systems.
  • Experience working in a higher education environment.
  • Experience with the Commonwealth of Virginia classification system or similar state or federal system.
