Position Summary and Duties
Summary:
The Human Resources Business Partner will provide human resources operational and strategic support to faculty, staff and administrator assigned business units, and will work closely with the director employee engagement in developing, implementing and evaluating HR policies, procedures and programs related to employment, employee relations and professional development. Manage the recruitment and employment process, employee relations, job classification, orientation, and general benefits inquiries for assigned units. Ensure that HR professional development opportunities and statutory training is carried out, based on need and compliance, for assigned units. Participate in developing and facilitating overall HR training and professional development programs as assigned by the supervisor.
Essential functions include:
Ensure jobs are posted and advertised effectively and in accordance with standard procedures; identify appropriate and diverse recruitment venues; participate in candidate interviewing as needed, assist in setting up and training search committees, ensure candidate screening and offers are compliant with policy and procedure. Troubleshoot questions and problems regarding the online recruitment system. Confer with others to gather all details for hiring and or changes and process information; keep employee and supervisor informed appropriately relative to status of actions taken or issues that arise. Assist new hires through the orientation and on boarding process and set up new employee files; liaison with payroll and other HR units. Coordinate I-9 and VISA documentation and processing as required. Attend unemployment or other hearings as assigned. Update HR recruiting and other HR functional systems and generate management reports as requested. Responsible for new hire, change and termination documentation and workflows; conduct exit interviews and analyze exit and turnover data and make recommendations for continuous improvement.
Provide consultation to supervisors and employees on employee relations issues related to employment, performance management, complaints, compensation planning, training and development, benefit inquiries, and all employee relations issues, maintaining positive employee relations. Coach supervisors and employees on various issues impacting work; e.g., staffing, performance management, conflicts, EEO, ADA, compliance issues, etc. Interpret policy and regulations and provide guidance and counsel to supervisors and employees, escalating complex or unusual situations to the Director or AVP. Respond to employee complaints, conduct investigations and handle grievances in accordance with policy and procedure and under direction of the director employee engagement.
Manage the performance evaluation and merit process for assigned units. Meet with clients on staffing issues and job evaluation; perform job analyses, assist with writing job descriptions, review compensation for equity; and work with the director compensation and HR operations on job description and compensation approvals; approve and code off-cycle pay prior to processing through payroll. Assist with the merit cycle and/or other compensation adjustments and track vacancies and budget for assigned units. Travel to various campus locations as assigned.
Respond to general benefits and compensation inquiries, referring complex issues to the benefits or compensation units. Initiate and monitor documentation and workflows relative to personnel changes such as promotion, pay changes, status changes, job changes, benefit eligibility, and the like, ensuring accuracy and compliance with policy, procedure and regulations. Adhere to payroll schedules and liaison with payroll to provide necessary documentation to ensure proper pay and tax processing.
Participate in feedback sessions, assist in developing and implementing training programs and recognition programs; facilitate supervisory and other training programs as assigned and ensure that HR professional development opportunities and statutory training is carried out, based on need and compliance, for assigned units. Provide employee relations guidance and interpretation on consistent application of HR standards, policies, and procedures in compliance with University policies and local, state, and federal regulations, while upholding the mission, values and goals of the institution. Meet regularly with and collaborate with line managers and other to assure that HR services meet or exceed expectations. Assist in creating an exceptional HR service organization to assist the University to achieve its strategic goals. Partner with line management and the HR Directors in translating business strategy into HR actions that drive University results.
Participate in special projects such as system upgrades, student employment initiatives, professional development planning, implementing and facilitating, policy development, and/or other HR projects as assigned; will take a leadership role in one or more assigned HR focus area(s) including employee recognition, internships, student employment, graduate assistantships, professional development, etc. Foster and maintain positive relationships with HR constituents, payroll, and customer base. Collaborate with others on developing and implementing creative solutions; exchange information with internal and external sources with tact and diplomacy. Maintain and expand knowledge and understanding of federal and state laws/regulations affecting HR management. Develop and maintain internal procedures and policies as required.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree
3 to 5 years of related experience
  • Knowledge of and ability to keep current in state, federal and local employment laws such as EEO, ADA, FLSA, FMLA, Workers’ Compensation, etc.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, and content development experience; tack and diplomacy in communications.
  • Good presentation skills with ability to present to and engage large audiences.
  • Good judgment, creativity and problem solving skills with ability to develop and initiate recommendations and objectively coach employees and management through complex and difficult situations.
  • Good research and analytical skills with ability to interpret data and convey such analysis to stakeholders both internal and external.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Proficient with MS Office and experience with HRIS systems.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and superior customer service skills with ability to consistently follow through.
  • Must be a positive team player, adaptable to a changing environment.
  • Ability to keep confidentiality and build trust.
  • Valid driver’s license and daily access to a vehicle for local travel.
  • Ability to support the mission and values of a Catholic Jesuit education, as well as University goals for institutional diversity.
