About CALS Human Resources

CALS Human Resources is a team of 14 HR and Payroll specialists that serve the college; partners with members of the CALS' community to promote distinctive performance and investment in successful outcomes by providing advice and consultation on workplace issues, policies, performance management and other human resource practices.

The Opportunity

As a Human Resources Assistant V, you will be an integral part of our team, providing expert consultation and advice on human resource matters to faculty, managers, and staff within CALS. You will be responsible for facilitating a wide range of HR activities, including job design, recruitment, appointment procedures, compensation practices, and leaves of absence. The role requires building strong relationships across the Cornell community while maintaining the utmost confidentiality.

Key Responsibilities:

Non-Academic Human Resource Appointment Management: Initiate, troubleshoot, and process appointments, reappointments, and other employment-related actions for non-academic, union, and temporary staff. Assist in drafting and reviewing job descriptions and submitting them for approval. Monitor probationary reviews and address performance issues with the HR Director. Conduct exit interviews for resigning or transferring staff members.

Employee Relations and Performance Management: Provide support and consultation to Administrative Managers and supervisors on employee relations issues. Assist in the disciplinary process and provide appropriate referrals to University offices when needed. Support managers in performance management techniques and annual performance dialogues.

Departmental Human Resource Policy Support: Act as a primary contact for employees seeking information on HR policies and procedures. Partner with college leave management representative for faculty and staff medical and family leave requests.

Academic Human Resource Appointment Management: Support the employment, reappointment, and promotion process for faculty and academic staff. Ensure appropriate application and interpretation of Faculty Handbook and College policies. Assist in facilitating leaves for faculty and support academic position justification and promotion paperwork.

Position Recruitment: Coordinate all non-academic recruiting activities and provide comprehensive assistance to hiring managers. Collaborate with Recruitment & Employment Center Diversity consultants to identify diversifying recruitment strategies. Assist with screening applicants, conducting reference checks, and drafting offer letters.

Merit Program: Provide support and consultation on annual salary improvement programs and exceptional merit and equity programs.

Process Improvements & Other Position Related Responsibilities: Support process improvements to increase operational efficiencies within CALS-HR. Maintain personnel files following College and University retention policies. Participate in continuous learning and specialized training in key HR functional areas.

This is a full-time, non-exempt Contract College position that is based in Ithaca, NY. This position follows a 2:3 campus-to-home hybrid work schedule. All team members are required to work on campus on Tuesday’s due to a weekly staff meeting. This hybrid work schedule is subject to change at any time. Typical work hours are 8am-4:30pm Monday through Friday, but flexibility is available to help support work-life-balance and department needs.  

What We Need

We are looking for a team member who is customer-service oriented, collaborative, a critical thinker, adept at problem solving, and flexible in their approach to providing guidance based on the specific needs and preferences of each individual customer. Additionally, you will:   

  • Hold an Associate’s degree and 4 to 6 years relevant experience or equivalent combination.

  • Have the ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.

  • Discreetly manage highly confidential material and to exercise sound judgment and discretion.

  • Have outstanding customer service skills with an ability to manage multiple and competing deadlines concurrently in a high-pressure environment.

  • Be proficient with Microsoft products including spreadsheets, databases, and word processing software essential.

  • Have exceptional oral and written communication skills.

  • Identify opportunities for process improvements and then execute them.

  • Demonstrate practice of the University Skills for Success.

If you possess these experiences and skills this may be the role for you! There are a few other qualifications that we would view as incredibly helpful in this role, to include: 

  • PHR or SPHR or ability to obtain within two years.

  • Experience with Workday.

  • Experience with electronic time collection and human resource and payroll policies and procedures.

  • Basic understanding and application of HR knowledge and applicable HR laws at the local, State, and Federal level.

  • This position is eligible for a hybrid work arrangement. Employees typically perform this role remotely 3 days per week and on-campus 2 days per week. The university reserves the right to modify, suspend, revoke, or terminate the hybrid work arrangement at any time.

  • This position is located in Ithaca, New York. Employees who work remotely may receive multiple W-2 Forms depending on their work location. The New York Convenience of employer guidelines require New York State individual tax reporting and withholdings for this position. Additional individual state income tax filings may also be required if working temporarily outside New York State.
