Overview

You will join the Human Factors & Experience Design (HFXD) team and help shape OTTAVA™, Johnson & Johnson's new surgical robotic system.

As a Human Factors Engineer, you will support Human Factors workstreams that are essential to the success of Ottava. You will contribute to usability evaluations with mentorship from lead Human Factors Engineers. You will work in close partnership with your colleagues to meet program objectives, using your disciplinary knowledge and passion for safety and usability to influence key design decisions!

Responsibilities

  • Apply Human Factors knowledge to the definition, design, and evaluation of our products.
  • Partner with other functions (Design, R&D, Regulatory, Clinical) to help tackle problems that arise over the course of the product development cycle.
  • Support usability and validation-related activities such as large Human Factors studies assessing critical workflows end-to-end in simulated environments.
  • Support generation of deliverables such as Usability Engineering File documentation, task analyses, usability risk analyses, usability testing protocols / reports throughout the product development process from formative testing of early prototypes through usability validation of final designs.
  • Keep abreast of regulations and best practices for medical device human factors (e.g., IEC 62366, AAMI HE75, ISO 14971, and the latest FDA guidance on applying Human Factors engineering).
Education:
  • BS/BA Degree in Human Factors Engineering (HFE), Usability Engineering, Cognitive Science, Psychology, Anthropology, Industrial Engineering or equivalent is required
  • Post-Graduate Degrees (MS) are a plus and will be considered as part of the applicant's professional experience.
Required Experience & Skills:
  • Minimum of 2 years' human factors / usability engineering experience
  • Experience in supporting aspects of the HFE process including ethnographic research, formative and summative studies, documentation for design control and risk management
  • Some experience working with R&D, Product Management and Implementation teams to develop a safe and effective product
  • Knowledge of human factors principles; working knowledge of task and use-related risk analysis methods; basic knowledge of human perception, cognition, anthropometrics, biomechanics, and physiology.
Preferred Experience & Skills:
  • Familiarity with FDA, ISO, AAMI, and other relevant usability regulations and standards
  • Medical Device product development or experience working in a highly regulated industry.
Other:
  • This position is based in Santa Clara, CA and requires up to 10% (Domestic/International) travel.

The anticipated base pay range for this position is ($95,500) to ($153,000).

The Company maintains highly competitive, performance-based compensation programs. Under current guidelines, this position is eligible for an annual performance bonus in accordance with the terms of the applicable plan. The annual performance bonus is a cash bonus intended to provide an incentive to achieve annual targeted results by rewarding for individual and the corporation's performance over a calendar/ performance year. Bonuses are awarded at the Company's discretion on an individual basis.
