Position Summary

The Human Tissue Repository-Tissue Analysis Shared Resource (HTR-TASR) is seeking to fill a HS Research Tech II position for work on HTR-TASR service facility projects as well as various contract/grant-funded and/or subcontracted projects. The research technician will be responsible for collection of specimens (such as blood and solid tissues) in the pre-operative areas, the gross room, and/or the operating rooms. The research technician will be responsible for recording patient and specimen data, and processing, storage, and transport/shipping of specimens.  The Research Technician will also participate in chart review, data extraction and/or entry, secure and safe data transmission to external sites, and assisting with preparation of reports and responses to queries about the data.  He/she will be exposed to confidential patient information and documents, and thus, completion of the mandated UNM privacy training will be required.  Additional responsibilities will also include other basic and routine laboratory duties as assigned or required by the various projects and the HTR-TASR.  These duties will include Immunohistochemistry and basic histology techniques such as paraffin embedding of tissue, sectioning of paraffin blocks, mounting tissue sections on slides, and H&E staining of tissue sections on slides.  Other duties will include various general lab procedures, equipment maintenance, cleaning/disinfecting lab-ware, cleaning of the lab, taking inventory, stocking supplies, pulling and filing tissue blocks and slides, digital scanning of slides, cataloging/data entry pertaining to banked tissue samples and research projects.

Conditions of Employment
  • For individual positions in which driving is a job requirement, a valid NM driver's license and valid UNM driver's permit will be required.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
  • Annual TB testing may be required if working in a patient care area.
Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Biomedical Sciences, or another biological or health related field
  • Experience collecting, handling, processing, and banking blood and solid tissue
  • Basic histology and staining techniques
  • Knowledge of scientific research methodology, lab and chemical safety, and standards in the handling of human tissue and protected health information
  • Records maintenance skills, ability to legibly print/write, attention to detail
  • Skill in collecting, entering, and verifying research data
  • Ability to utilize computerized scientific database to manage research data
  • Experience performing Immunohistochemistry
  • Ability to work early and/or late shifts (i.e. 7am to 4pm M-F or 9am to 6pm M-F) with some flexibility in hours as needed
  • The ability to effectively and sensitively communicate verbally and in writing with other members of the research team and with the patients
  • Computer literate in programs such as Excel and Word
