Position Summary

Under the general supervision of the Principal Investigator (PI), Dr. Ludmila Bakhireva, and the Research Scientist 3, the incumbent will be involved in recruitment of research participants for the clinical studies conducted by the College of Pharmacy Substance Use Research and Education Center at UNM. Ongoing clinical studies focus primarily on pregnant women and children and require the incumbent to be comfortable working with vulnerable populations. The incumbent will work closely with prenatal care clinics to recruit patients for clinical studies and administer structured interviews for Spanish- and English-speaking pregnant patients enrolled in the study. This position will require travel to off-site clinics in the greater Albuquerque area. Occasional travel to off-site clinics outside of the greater Albuquerque area may be required. The incumbent will also coordinate study-related procedures, including data entry and collection/processing of biological specimens. He/she/they will work closely with co-investigators, laboratory personnel, and hospital personnel. This position will require rotated weekend and evening coverage of research activities within a 40-hour work week. Must possess a current valid Driver’s License and their own vehicle or the ability to drive a University vehicle, as the position requires travel to off-site clinics in the greater Albuquerque area and surrounding communities.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Recruit pregnant and postpartum women from UNM and community clinics to participate in research studies
  • Administer eligibility screening questionnaires, informed consent procedures, structured interviews
  • Abstract study specific information from patient's electronic medical records after completion of required training
  • Collect, process, ship, and bank or catalog biological specimens according to established protocol as appropriate to the specific objectives of the research study
  • Plan and organize day-to-day on-site research activities, and resolve procedural and logistical problems as appropriate to the timely completion of research activities
  • Assist with the administration and collection of neurobehavioral, MRI, EEG, and research activities
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills in English required to communicate with clinical staff and research participants
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills required to work in a fast-paced research environment

Conditions of Employment
  • For individual positions in which driving is a job requirement, a valid NM driver's license and valid UNM driver's permit will be required.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
  • Annual TB testing may be required if working in a patient care area.
Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED; at least 1 year of directly related student practicum or equivalent experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Fluency in Spanish is preferred but not required
  • Prior experience working with vulnerable populations, including pregnant women and children and/or patients with substance use disorder
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality of subjects
  • Prior research experience, especially with clinical studies or with community engagement
  • Prior experience working with clinical personnel
  • Prior experience with electronic medical record review and/or abstractions
  • Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary and deadline-oriented environment
