Departmental Objective
The Freeman Center is the focal point for Christopher Newport University’s indoor sport and recreation and health and wellness services and initiatives, while providing a place for the University community to meet and for students to perform. The goal for this facility is to offer an increased edge for our “indoor” athletic teams during Conference and NCAA competitions, support the personal development and well-being of the members of the university community, and expand the reach of the University to the local, regional and national spotlight.
Purpose of the Position
Reporting to the Building Manager of the Freeman Center and Pope Chapel through the Housekeeping Manager and Maintenance Supervisor, the successful candidate will ensure the cleanliness of assigned areas. Duties include cleaning the field house, fitness pavilion, offices, restrooms, dining area, hallways, stairwells, foyers, lounges, locker rooms, conference rooms, exterior entrance ways, etc.
Additional duties include cleaning the Chapel’s Vestibule, conference rooms, Celebration Hall and all areas assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Related to Position
Knowledge of cleaning methods and cleaning supplies
Skilled in operating housekeeping equipment such as vacuum cleaner, shop vacuums, buffers, scrubbing machine and carpet/upholstery extractor machine
Ability to stand/walk on various surfaces for extended periods of time, lift and carry objects up to 45 lbs., physically move furniture/equipment, tolerate frequent bending, stooping, climbing stairs and ladders
Ability to communicate effectively and maintain positive relations with faculty, staff and students
Ability to follow oral and written instructions
Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification Required
Experience:
  • Experience in housekeeping work
  • Experience in cleaning methods and cleaning supplies
Additional Consideration(s)
Education:
  • High school diploma or equivalent

Experience:
  • Housekeeping experience in a college or university setting
  • Skilled in the use of cleaning machines and equipment

This is a classified position. New and returning classified employees are required to complete a 12-month probationary period;
