Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

Position Summary

The Horticultural Technician supports the Coker Arboretum Curator by maintaining the safety and aesthetics of the garden so that it is visitor-ready at all times. This includes path maintenance, seasonal care of plantings, and maintenance of hand tools and small equipment used in the daily operations. Basic garden maintenance tasks include weeding, raking, leaf blowing, mowing/ string trimming), planting, pruning, etc. This position will also help motivate and engage volunteers, interns and work-study students working in the Arboretum.

This position also helps the Coker Arboretum Curator conduct periodic inventories of the collection and keep up with plant labeling in the garden as well as contribute to North Carolina Botanical Garden’s (NCBG) educational outreach by helping deliver talks, tours, and classes.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Graduation from high school and some experience in horticultural work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Special Licensure or Certification: May require North Carolina Pesticide License; North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

*Proficiency in landscape installation and year-round general garden maintenance.
*Proficiency in the use of landscaping tools and equipment (e.g. blower, string trimmer, riding mower).
*Familiarity with the flora of the southeastern U.S. and its use in a landscape setting.
*Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite applications.
*Willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends.

Required Licenses/Certifications
Special Physical/Mental Requirements

*Ability to work out-of-doors year-round and endure exposure to summer sun, heat, and humidity, as well as cold and/or rainy conditions, and natural hazards (mosquitos, ticks, fire ants, venomous snakes, poison ivy) on a routine basis with or without reasonable accommodations.
*Ability to safely lift or move up to 50 pounds with or without special accommodations.
