The School of Medicine, Marlene & Stewart Greeenbaum Comprehensive Cancer Center (UMGCCC) has an opportunity for a Histology Technician for the Pathology and Biorepository Shared Service (PBSS).   The Histology Tech prepares human/animal tissues for analysis and evaluation by Pathologists in order to diagnose diseases, in accordance with standard procedures. Under general supervision, processes, embeds, sections, and stains tissue from research specimens.

This is a Contractual Position

PRIMARY DUTIES:

  • Embeds processed tissue in paraffin, assuring proper orientation of the tissue, and re-embed improperly embedded tissues as needed, assuring accuracy in accordance with generally accepted Pathology and departmental procedures.
  • Sections embedded tissue specimens using a microtome; places sectioned specimens on glass slides.
  • Performs routine Hematoxylin and Eosin staining (H&E) of paraffin embedded sections.
  • Coverslips slides according to ASCP standards of performance.
  • Prepares stains and buffer solutions; uses mathematical formulas that give percent solutions or weight volumes; prepares other solutions and chemical as needed in accordance with departmental operating procedures.
  • Performs standard and special staining procedures to demonstrate microorganisms or other tissue components on paraffin sections.
  • Performs enzyme histochemical procedures on paraffin embedded tissue. Uses control specimen properly in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Prepares reagents and controls, preps samples for further testing (e.g. embedding, staining, etc.). Keeps work areas well stocked, clean, neat and orderly.
  • Independently identifies and resolves problems, equipment, and specimen integrity identification.

Qualifications

  

Education: High School Diploma or GED.
Experience: Two years specialized laboratory specimen preparation experience in histology or electron microscopy depending on the specific area to be supported.
Preferred:  Two-year Associate (AA) Degree from an accredited histotechnology program, OR completion of a certificate program or a NAACLS accredited Histotechnician/Histotechnologist training program OR on-the-job training with at least 1 year of comprehensive histology laboratory experience in a Histopathology Lab in the U.S., Canada, or an accredited laboratory.
Other: Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
General knowledge of applicable safety, quality control, specialized processing and staining techniques and specimen handling guidelines and procedures. Skill in using applicable laboratory equipment such as centrifuges, microscopes, ultramicrotomes, paraffin microtomes, stainers, diamond knives, glass knives, cryostats and sterilizers.Ability to work quickly and accurately when under strict deadlines; excellent hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills; and to wear and work in personal protective equipment.
