Job Summary

The incumbent will support the Health IT leadership teams in the planning/reviewing & Communicating the technical aspects of application environments management, software Special Updates (SU), Interim Updates (IU), and new application releases to design/manage the environment portfolio for EPIC application.
In this highly matrixed organization, the Health IT Environments Manager must possess strong interpersonal skills such as team building, consensus building, diplomacy, persuasiveness, and the ability to create a positive work environment and will need to be able to influence people who do not report directly to them. The incumbent will function in an integration/advisory role between application/technical/departmental leadership and plan for upcoming technical enhancements and Scheduled as well as Ad-Hoc system updates. 

This position relies on connecting concepts across both applications and technology infrastructure, applying systems infrastructure concepts and health system or campus objectives to resolve issues, up to and including the most complex, with health system-wide impact. Works on issues with little or no institutional precedent where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. This position is considered a subject matter expert for the health system. Gives technical presentations to senior management across campus or health system audiences. Represents Health IT on campuswide, health system, or Office of the President and / or institution-wide and systemwide committees. Sets technical direction and environments strategy for Epic and other related clinical systems. Functions as a technical lead/subject matter expert. Performs independent research, prototypes, evaluates, and champions new technology including cost/benefit analyses, up to and including the most complex.

Department Description

Health IT is responsible for all aspects of the clinical and business software applications of UCSF Health hospitals, practices, affiliates, and community partners. This includes the Electronic Health Record (Epic-APeX), which supports the clinical, revenue cycle, and clinical operational functions of the health system and its affiliates, and approximately 95 other software applications involved in patient care and operations.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in health care information technology, computer science, or related area, and / or equivalent combination of experience / training.
  • 5-10 years of relevant technology experience
  • 10+ years of relevant progressive experience
  • Current Epic data courier administrator certificate or completed within 6 months of hire
  • Expert knowledge of how to apply technologies and systems to meet business needs.
  • Experience leading a team of IT professionals in multiple technology areas.
  • Experience with determining how systems and technology should operate most efficiently and how changes to technology systems will affect outcomes, operations, and business objectives. Expert knowledge of computer security best practices and policies. Ability to contribute to campuswide, medical center or Office of the President and / or institution-wide policy efforts.
  • Ability to elicit and communicate technical and non-technical information in a clear and concise manner.
  • Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team. Demonstrates problem-solving skills. Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to write technical documentation in a clear and concise manner.
  • Understanding of system performance monitoring and actions that can be taken to improve or correct performance.
  • Knowledge of the design, development, and application of technology and systems to meet business needs.
  • Thorough understanding of and experience with systems-related issues and actions that can be taken to improve or correct performance, including comfort engaging vendors.
  • Demonstrated skills associated with adapting equipment and technology to serve user needs. Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of how system management actions affect other systems, system users, and dependent/related functions
  • Demonstrated expert knowledge, skills, and abilities associated with system problem identification and resolution. Experience with the design, configuration, operation, repair, and tuning of technology systems
  • Demonstrated ability to regularly interact effectively with senior management.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify complex problems and related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.
  • Available for 7 x 24 application support

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced experience writing and editing the most complex scripts used to perform system maintenance and administration.
  • Academic Medical Center experience

License/Certification

  • Current Epic data courier administrator certificate or completed within 6 months of hire
