Rutgers University-Newark, an urban public research university and anchor institution located in Newark, New Jersey, a city of promise, is seeking a Health Education Specialist. Reporting to the Director of Health Promotion Division (HPD), the Health EducationSpecialist is a crucial member of the team in fulfilling HPD’s mission: to make wellbeing easier. This individual is responsible for developing a comprehensive health promotion strategy and implementing environmental approaches to support student health and wellness on campus.
This position is responsible for and not limited to the following.
  • Specific areas of oversight include qualitative and quantitative assessment and evaluation, peer education, peer applied theatre, peer wellness coaching, evidence-informed interventions, informational services for outreach, and a socio-ecological approach to support campus/University policies and initiatives in order to cultivate a nourishing campus culture across all 10 dimensions of wellbeing (career, digital, emotional, environmental, financial, intellectual, multicultural, physical, social, and spiritual).
  • Works collaboratively with other members/departments within the Health and Wellness Unit of the Division of Student Affairs, as well as with departments throughout the Newark campus and University to form collective goals and foster a health promoting environment. This person represents HPD throughout the Newark campus and surrounding community while participating in cross-collaborative teams promoting wellness, health equity, and working toward social justice. This individual must be able to respond to and advocate for diverse student needs, and build support, collaboration, and community.
  • Supervises and mentors student office managers and student staff
  • Supports the department’s outreach, marketing, and communication

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Requires a Master’s degree in a related field OR or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience that demonstrates applied knowledge in developing curriculum, implementing, and evaluating health education programs with adult learners.
  • Also requires a minimum of two years of relevant experience in health promotion, public health, wellness coaching, or a related field

Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Must have highly effective verbal/oral and written communication skills and have demonstrated collaboration and community-building skills
  • Wellness Coach certification, or ability to become certified as a priority
  • Ability to develop training for peer wellness coaches and must be comfortable teaching skills, specifically in positive psychology and motivational interviewing
  • Existing health education knowledge and experience as a generalist
  • Understanding of and experience with issues related to social justice, diversity, equity, justice, and inclusion, working with under-represented minority groups, first-generation student needs, and/or multicultural programs and services
  • Serve a diverse population and work in-depth with peer educators, peer actors, and peer wellness coaches
Preferred Qualifications
  • Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) or CHES eligible. Wellness coach certified or eligible.
  • Minimum of two years of professional experience in higher education
  • Experience advising peer educators/peer leaders in higher education
  • Master’s degree or advanced certification in Public Health, Health Promotion, Health Education, integrative wellness or related field
Equipment Utilized
  • Mastery of Office 365 and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Familiarity with Canva/Adobe Creative Suite preferred
  • Working knowledge of traditional office equipment (i.e. copier, scanner, printer, laminating machine, multi-line telephone, laptops, etc.…)
  • Familiarity with emerging social media trends and online teaching platforms.

Immunization Requirements
