Primary Purpose of Department
The primary purpose of the Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Office is to administer an institution wide program to establish and maintain a safe and healthy working and living environment for faculty, staff, and students through the identification and correction of unsafe conditions, maintenance of an occupational health program, safety training, accident prevention, regulatory control, and the provision of consultative services to management on Environmental, Health and Safety matters. This unit identifies and interprets federal, state, and local safety and health regulations and codes and also assists the university community with their application.
Primary Purpose of Position
The primary purpose of this position is to research, develop, implement, analyze, and continuously improve the University Health and Safety program.
Summary of Position Responsibilities
The position will be responsible for writing programs; inspecting facilities; hazard identifications; implementing controls; conducting training; regulatory compliance; emergency preparedness; investigations; assessments; audits; industrial hygiene sampling and working with campus stakeholders to ensure campus community safety. The specific compliance programs will include but are not limited to, Occupational Health, Occupational Safety, Injury Incident Prevention, Ergonomics, Indoor Air Quality, Hearing Conservation, Bloodborne Pathogens, Respiratory Protection, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), Electrical Safety, Lock Out Tag Out (LOTO), and Confined Space.
Minimum Education/Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in a physical science, biological science, environmental science/engineering, occupational safety, industrial technology or related discipline; and 
  • Three to five years of related experience; or 
  • Equivalent combination of training and experience. 
  • All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • Advanced degree in the life sciences, engineering, business, safety, or related field.
  • Relevant certifications (i.e. ASP, CSP, CIH)
  • Demonstrated knowledge, understanding, and application of confined space, lockout tagout, and electrical safety.
  • Demonstrated experience and effectiveness in higher education, health care, or the public sector.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment in applying and interpreting safety compliance policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Demonstrated experience with calibrating industrial hygiene equipment and new technology systems.
Necessary Certifications/Licenses
The position may require additional training, certifications, or licensure.
