Job Description
General Description: The Head of Cataloging Librarian manages all aspects of cataloging operations, including supervising cataloging Library Specialists and liaising with NOVA Libraries staff to ensure excellent cataloging services are provided. The Head of Cataloging contributes to efficient collection management of library resources including creating analytics reports, batch loading of new electronic books, metadata enhancements, authority control, and inventory control.
Duties and Tasks:
  • Responsible for cataloging operations
  • Manages the cataloging unit’s operations.
  • Supports library-wide systems initiatives related to improving the library services platform (Alma), search and discovery service (Primo), and marketplace options (Rialto and GOBI).
  • Supervises and trains cataloging Library Specialists responsible for copy cataloging.
  • Responsible for original and complex copy cataloging.
  • Responsible for catalog maintenance.
  • Contributes to efficient library-wide collection management of library resources, including inventory control, metadata quality control, authority control, and creating analytics reports.
  • Supports frequent improvements to the library services platform and library online catalog.
  • Supports Acquisitions including receiving and processing.

Employees must reside in Virginia, Maryland, or the District of Columbia.

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

KSA's/Required Qualifications
KSAs:
  • Practical and theoretical knowledge of a broad range of cataloging standards including Resource Description and Access (RDA), FRBR, Linked Data, Library Reference Model (LRM), LC- PCC PS, Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH), Library of Congress Classification (LCC), LCGFT, LCDGT, and PCC Provider-Neutral E-Resources Cataloging.
  • Practical knowledge of MARC metadata standard.
  • Experience using library service platforms and OCLC Connexion/OCLC Record Manager.
  • Expertise in collection management including inventory control, metadata quality control, authority control, and creating analytics reports.
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel.
  • Experience with MarcEdit.
  • Experience in supervision and training of cataloging staff.
  • Experience in developing and managing cataloging workflows.
  • Excellent communication and analytic skills, including the ability to work well in a team-based environment.
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills.

Required Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in Library Science or Library & Information Science awarded by a regionally accredited institution.
  • Experience in cataloging.
  • Supervisory experience.

  • Experience with Ex Libris Alma and Primo.
  • Knowledge of both electronic and print library acquisitions workflows.
  • Aptitude for learning new technologies and metadata standards.
  • Awareness of new trends, emerging technologies, and critical issues in cataloging and technical services.
  • Knowledge of automation technologies commonly used in Library Technical Services (e.g. APIs, EDI, etc.).
  • Master’s degree in Library Science or Library & Information Science awarded by an ALA accredited institution.
